Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Davenport.
Kristy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Pearl’s Beauty started mainly from my personal encounters as a child. Since birth, I was allergic to almost everything. In that time, there was no specialized product for children with super sensitive skin. My great grandmother who the company is named after was the person my parents would go to when there was nothing in the stores.
Pearl Magwood who of Native American and African descent made mostly everything from scratch. Growing up, everything that was put on my skin was specially made or recommended by my great grandmother. Even at 92 years old her skin was flawless. I have been following her recipes and techniques most of my life. Over the last couple of years, life happened that put me in a situation where I became clearly aware of my purpose between my mother becoming very sick and almost passing because of a mistake of a doctor.
My interest in natural healing and health increased. This life-changing event of being constantly in and out of the hospital for over three years changed not only my perspective but also life. It opened my eyes in making me aware that not everyone is here to understand your situation as well as your purpose in life. In this time of healing, understanding for not just me but my family I knew it was time to create my own business with a purpose.
My grandmother Pearl who carried me to see my full vision, for she was a charitable woman. She always gave back to the community in some special way whether it was through wisdom or through pleasing people with her nurturing spirit. In the process of looking for a name for my company, the name Pearl popped into my mind. I then knew that was the perfect name for my skincare line. Everything that she stood for is everything that my company stands for.
Taking fond of creating and research different holistically and herbal ways to heal the body inside and out. I learned how to personalize my grandmother’s recipes that she used on my skin into my own. It became a hobby that I loved and started to do on my personal time.
On my downtime at work what brought me peace was coming up with different ideas to making my hobby into my own business. Sometimes as a creative it is hard to work something so routine as nine to five or even working for someone. I knew that in the long-term my goal was to create a way where I can be creative, having my own business as well as being financially stable. I feel that in order to run a successful business you must have a sincere purpose behind it.
What pushes me the most is being able to inspire others that have hypersensitivity to certain products to that it there is a product that you no longer have to be afraid of. My whipped butter is created out of love and created to inspire others to embrace their beautiful skin.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Creating my own business has not exactly been a smooth road. There has been a lot of ups and downs. There have been times I thought I knew exactly what to do. But there has also been times where I had to admit that I had no idea in running a business. I had to take the time to educate myself because there is nothing worse than making the wrong business decision.
Making products is something I am fond of until I realized that there is more to a business than just making products. This was when I had realized that I had to expand my mind on more than just researching different essential oils etc… but on researching on how to operate a successful business. I have always have to remind myself that nothing in this world comes easy.
Especially when it comes to the things that you want for long-term. In running a business, most things are learned through trial and error. That is why it is so important to have a good support system to always encourage you to keep going. It is good to have someone who knows your goals and your purpose to keep you on track even when you have the smallest doubts.
The best advise that I can give to someone who is starting a business is to have confidence in yourself and your product,
Pearl’s Beauty LLC – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Pearl’s Beauty is natural skin care that is handmade. My staple product is at this current moment is my whipped Shea butter. I mix each with a mixture of various amount of beneficial oils that nurtures and penetrates the skin. Which depending on your this butter penetrates and moisturizes, keeping your skin moisturized throughout the day.
My proudest moment of being a business owner was doing my first trade show. It was an amazing experience because it gave me the opportunity to connect with my clients on a personal level. It is defiantly a difference between selling products through website and selling face to face. I am a person who is all about experiences and making connections.
Being able to see upfront the peoples reactions to trying my product brings me pride and joy. I believe that what sets me apart from different from others is honestly just being my self. Trying to be or trying to compete against others can only deter you away from your own purpose,
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
What defines success to me is being able to achieve the most realistic and unrealistic goals. I say that simply because in business even though you can control most things.
There are days where you may sell nothing, and then there are days where you may sell everything. Success to me means to sell out quality products without worrying so much on quantity. If you have a product that is helping someone you will always have returning loyal customers were then recommendations can come from word of mouth.
My markers points for success in my business is being able to reach my sale goal in the time that I have given my self. As well as building making sure that my customers are either constant or increasing. Also making sure the relationships with trust in my customers increase. To me, that makes the markers of success in my company.
