Meet Phantom Phunk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phantom Phunk.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
At the start of 2018, the original members of Phantom Phunk Hector (Guitar) and Nick (Drums) teamed up with vocalist, Alexa Toro, and rapper, Wayne Price to start a new record, titled Struggle With Me. The EP contains vestiges of the Alt-Rock vibe from the band’s previous incarnations while venturing out into more synth and bass-driven sounds that tap into other genres like Trip-Hop, Alt-Rap, and Psychedelic-Punk. While all four members come from completely different musical backgrounds (Hector-Studio Geek/Nick-Punk Rocker/Alexa-Festival Jammer/Wayne-Hip-Hop), their individual styles merge into a sound that is diverse and unique.

Please tell us about your art.
Our music is our art, and there’s really two sides to it. The first side is our records. We have our own recording studio so we like to spend time exploring different sounds and styles as we are writing music. Our process is to take each song and find the sounds that the song needs, and to adapt our styles according to what the track is calling for. We aren’t the kind of group to just put power chords over everything because we can. For example, the track Every Where You Go started out on guitar but we produced it with synths and electronic drums because the song is more a pop song and not a rock song. We had to adapt our style so that the song could come out the way it was meant to be.

The other part of our art is our live show. We put a lot of work into our show to make it an experience. We don’t want people to just see us play songs. We want them to feel something. We have incorporated lights into our set which is great because it has added a whole new dimension with how the audience gets to take in the sound. On top of that, we also just put an immense amount of energy into our performance. We move around a lot and we always end a show dripping with sweat and sometimes even blood too. For us, it’s our chance to really feel the music when we are on stage and the audience gets to witness that. And when they see us feeling it they feel comfortable to feel it too.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Our advice to young artists is to take everything seriously and to stay organized. There’s so much that goes into being a musical artist, between actually being musical and artistic, to building a web page and a following, and content to support your platform. It really takes a lot of planning, and a lot of trial and error, but if you work with a team of people, and you guys stay organized–plan out your practice for the week, designate some time for social media, or some funds to your next record, etc.–then you already have a head start on most other acts.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
We are on as many platforms as we can be. Spotify, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, even iTunes, not to mention our own website. The best way for people to support us is to follow us on Spotify and social media. Each click goes a long way really.
