Today we’d like to introduce you to Tone C..
Tone C. (born May 29th, 1988) known professionally as “Tone C.” is a Panamanian Rapper, Songwriter, and Executive. After recently launching his own music management company “Mayor Management” and coordinating his noteworthy annual “Miramar We Live” Concert series, he is quickly engraving his name into the core of South Florida’s Indie hip-hop scene.
Acclaimed as “Da Mayor”, Tone C. began taking interest in music in 2000 after migrating to New York from Miami ensuing his parents’ divorce. Being introduced to “battle rapping” early as a southern-bred adolescent was revitalizing for the newfound emcee. Within time, He adapted to the northern culture and developed a style, persona and sound of his own. Outset as a battle rapper, Tone gained eminence as he rarely lost a match throughout his entire middle school and high school years. After graduating Miramar High school in 2006, he briefly
attended local Broward Community College before transferring to Florida International University. Tone planned to major in Criminal Justice but dropped out a few semesters later to pursue a music career.
In early 2007, he joined a group called “F.I. Ent”. They attracted a local buzz with their hit single “Pretty Lil Thing” which played on Miami ‘s WEDR 99 Jamz, home to Music mogul DJ Khaled. F.I.’s fame was short lived as the group was dismantled a year later. In 2009, Tone released his debut solo mixtape “CSI: Miramar”, which was followed by four more projects: “Mayor of Miramar”, “Time for Change “, B.R.O.W.A.R.D.” and “The Summary”. With five solo projects under his belt, Tone was and is still set to prove why they call him “Mayor”. In 2014, he announced his Debut Album “Hometown Hero” was in the works and released one of his most prominent singles “Never Stop” which was well received and landed him his own Station on Pandora Radio. He then followed up with the Rap /Reggae infused “Big Ting a Gwon” which was co-signed by International producer Jon FX and got the emcee a feature in XXL Magazine. As of late 2017, the album was delayed as other business ventures were launched and developed. Fast forward to late 2018, “Da Mayor” is currently back in the studio to complete his highly anticipated “Hometown Hero” album and gearing up for the national release of the third single named “Lights Out”.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a Panamanian Songwriter, Recording Artist, Entertainer, Entrepreneur & Public Figure. After releasing 5 solo mix tapes, I am currently working on my debut album “Hometown Hero LP”. I compose/create/perform what I like to call “Mayor Music”. My tunes are a crossbreed of mainstream elements and street anthems but the vibes are inspirational and motivational. One thing I want people to get from my music is to be great, Live life & want more! My entire career I’ve always been on the chase for greatness and my music and business ventures reflect and embody that.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
In my opinion, it has gotten harder for Artists in my industry today, well the hungry & hardworking ones at least.
Payola, politics and popularity in South Florida has tampered and weakened the true essence of the underground music scene. So many talented acts don’t get heard, respected or the opportunity because they don’t have the money while artists who don’t respect the craft or culture sail to the top because they know somebody or have a couple dollars. It’s crazy how it’s not about “talent” anymore. With so many factors working against you, it’s still beneficial because it forces you to get creative to find a way to overcome and beat the odds. If you can make it in Florida, you can make it anywhere! Lol
