Thanks for sharing your story with us Marty. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Got tired of working for other people and started my own company selling telecom services. Started as LDBS (long distance bull shit) in 1995 auditing AT&T, BellSouth, MCI etc bills and selling International calling plans to central and South America.
Business evolved into selling internet access and services in 1999. In 2005 we re-branded to South Florida VoIP. We are South Florida’s leading telecom services broker.
We deal with over 300 service providers and specialize in getting customers the best services at the lowest possible monthly cost.
We are paid by the service providers so we never charge a fee.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The business has changed a lot. When we first started it was all about long distance and international calling. The base rack rate for domestic calling was 32 cents a minute and most international calls were over $2.00 a minute. Now calling in the USA is either free or under 3 cents a minute and 99% of international calls are under 32 cents per minute.
We even have carriers who give free international calling when you use their Host VoIP services.
Local Lines with features used to be $60.00 with taxes and fees now they are $100.00. Hosted VoIP on the other hand is $18.00-$30.00 and include a suite of features that are amazing. When we started in 1995 Caller ID was just coming out and now the suite of features from Voicemail to e-mail is truly amazing. That said fully 50% of the business who switch to VoIP end up paying more and do not use 95% of the features that come with VoIP which is why it always pays to talk with a broker that sells many service providers.
