Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Katz.
Tara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My sister Erica and I have always had a knack for creative expression. From chopping the hair off of our Barbie dolls to give them a pixie cut to cutting the necklines on our sweatshirts to wearing lace armbands a la Madonna, we were always looking for cool new ways to show off our individuality. But as we grew up and had our own daughters, it became harder to find high-quality products that let our girls express their inner awesomeness. What was our option? What we’d always done: Make it ourselves.
Snap’t gives girls a way to express themselves, every hour of the day and every day of the week. It’s about having the freedom to change your style whenever you please and about embracing all the things that make you. Feeling a bit feisty on Monday morning? Time to rock a skull-and-crossbones necklace. Mellowed out by the afternoon? Just add a peace sign, and you’re good to go. People may try to put you in a box, but at Snap’t, we know nobody ever just fits into just one category.
That’s why we believe in mixing things up, piling things on and showing the world just what makes you funny, spicy, sensitive, moody, crazy, flirty, peace-loving and punk rock. What makes you an individual. What makes you Snap’t. We work exclusively with anti-bullying charities to help promote healthy self-esteem in young people.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming Snap’t has proved to be quite a challenge. Erica and I owned a restaurant together in NYC prior to having kids. The manufacturing industry was an entirely new arena for us to get to know. Aside from not having the experience in manufacturing, we were creating a product that needed to have a very specific functionality.
We entertained using different materials and methodology, and that part of the learning experience was extremely costly for us. We made some bad choices with some of the people we started working with who didn’t share our passion for high quality. This was also quite costly.
Ultimately, we realized that although we don’t have the years of experience behind us, we needed to trust our own intuition and make decisions based on what felt right to us.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Snap’t – what should we know?
Snap’t is a patent-pending line of accessories for girls. Start by choosing the accessory of your choice; necklaces, chokers, headbands, bag charms and more. You can add a layer to your accessory- we have super fun pom poms, tassels, feathers and more. Secure your layer in place with one of our 60+ enamel charms. Switch up your style whenever you want!
We are so proud to support anti-bullying charities. When Erica and I were growing up, our father used to (and still does) sign every card “Be You Always.” We never really gave much thought to what that was all about. Until we had our own children and slowly came to realize that he was always emphasizing us to be who we were, who we wanted to be, and not let anyone stand in our way. That’s what we are trying to promote with Snap’t! You are great just the way you are – so rock out whatever style makes you smile!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We treat people the way we want to be treated. It’s that simple. We will bend over backward for our customers to make sure they have the best experience possible.
