Meet Melissa Marrero of @AlwaysHungryMel and The CW South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Marrero.

Melissa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Sure! Two weeks after college, I landed my first job at ABC News (WPLG) in Miami as an associate producer. After a few months, I moved on up to producing the 5 am morning show when we were ranked the #1 Morning Show in South Florida. In my spare time, I shadowed reporters to get a feel for the field. I went out on hard news, local, investigative and entertainment stories.

And after just a few weeks, I realized my passion was for lifestyle and entertainment news. I started attending press junkets on my own time and producing pieces for air at WPLG. After doing that for a couple of months, I got a full-time on-air gig at The CW South Florida. I now produce and co-host our daily segments and entertainment weekend show “Inside South Florida.” I’ve been at The CW for over two and a half years now, and have enjoyed every minute of it.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve been fortunate enough to work in one of the largest television markets in the US, but it hasn’t always been easy! At WPLG, I worked the graveyard shift and managed to maneuver my way up. Working from 12 am to 9 am really affected my health, but I’m grateful for the experience. The morning crew made it easy to go to work, and I’ll never forget the relationships I created in those years and still maintain.

I’m so lucky for being able to create fun content and report on it every single day.

Please tell us about @AlwaysHungryMel.
One of the really cool things I cover every week for The CW South Florida is restaurants and that led me to start a food page on Instagram called “AlwaysHungryMia.” On that delicious page, you can find the most indulgent food in South Florida and around the world. WARNING! This page will make you hungry!
