Today we’d like to introduce you to Felipe Rodriguez Castillo.
Wynwood Shop, started back in 2013 when Diana & Felipe saw the need for a common space that could serve as a stable platform for local artists, musicians, and small brands to showcase their work. With the help of pop artist Michael Perez and Gallery 212 Miami, they created a monthly street market that would become an artistic and artisanal hub – and eventually an inherent part of the Wynwood art scene. In spring of 2017, the marketplace evolved into a permanent space at 196 NW 24th Street in Wynwood, Florida as a gallery and shop. Exhibits and merchandise focus on bringing together creative makers and artists and promote emerging talent and brands from around the world with a strong focus on Miami. Additionally, Wynwood Shop is now an official South Florida distributor of world famous, artist-favorite, Kobra Paint. Now, the Shop is looking forward to serving as a community hub, fomenting creative shop and recurring workshops such as graffiti painting to macramé making and woodcarving.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Many struggles are part of our history. Being outdoors for 3 years was never easy. In many occasions weather conditions ruined merchandise and made the job hard to bare. Specially in the summer. We knew that we had to continue our path to something better for the community and we are proud to see what we achieved as a group.
Another challenge in Wynwood is the high price of real state. We have been thoughtful and strategic. Now we offer a different retail shopping experience that customers can’t find anywhere else and that give us an edge.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Wynwood Shop – what should we know?
Wynwood Shop is a group of talented local artists and brands united under one roof. We are known for being passionate and driven not by profit, but for love of independent artistry and community. Apart from running the brick and mortar shop, we are launching an e-commerce platform (wynwoodshop.com) where people will be able to get the cool merch found at the store, artwork and all, as well as other national and international brands. What sets us apart is that at our headquarters in Wynwood, we are able to offer community outreach programs in the form of workshops and exhibits as well as custom made items ranging from jewelry to leather bags, to industrial steel pipe lamps.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The spirit of self-determination and D.I.Y. (do it yourself) ethics have made us carve our own path. It has propelled us into what we are now; An Independent, progressive & relevant hub of creativity.
