Meet Starr Hawkins of Babymommafit in South Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Starr Hawkins.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Starr. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My last retail job was at the Nike store on Lincoln Road about two and a half years ago. I had started there at the same time, I started Jetset’s Pilates Instructor program, and something told me to quit and go into fitness full time.

Back it up for about five years, I had just gotten sober and started taking classes at the flywheel. I really liked the release I felt from physical fitness. I then started working at Barry’s Bootcamp and started taking their classes regularly. Clients and Miami Beach locals watched the change in my body over time and were most impressed by my glutes. I tried out for Barry’s several times but just wasn’t confident in teaching. I always kept my job at Barry’s but continued to work retail jobs in between.

I was approached by jetset to do their training program and the rest was history. I started training my friends, then moms, then models, then even NFL players. About six months ago, I got the instructor position after trying for four years.

I then started to build an online social media presence. I started to grow a following through collating and doing workout videos with influencers and photographers. I began to run my social media as a business as well, becoming more of a personality.

I now train full time, doing what I love every day helping people. I work with brands like Puma, Nike, and live! I also get to make my own schedule and be there for my daughter more.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, being a single mom can be hard. My daughter’s father isn’t financially supportive, so I have worried about paying bills. I was in a relationship after that for about four years and when that ended, I felt like a failure and in even more financial insecurity. I struggle with anxiety and depression and have been sober for almost four years now, so I have to constantly do things to help my emotional state and sobriety.

Please tell us about Babymommafit.
I teach at Jetset Pilates in Miami Beach and I started the Booty and Abs class. I also teach at Barrys Bootcamp, I am the 12 pm girl, and I have a company called Assnabs, with my business partner @junglejohanna. I am known as the booty queen, so I specialize in glutes but dabble in a little bit of everything (boxing, pilates, weightlifting).

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing everything I have been through has shaped me into who I am today and every day, I grow and learn. It feels so good to be in the place I am in.
