Meet Nicolle Cure, Multidisciplinary Artist in Aventura

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicolle Cure.

Nicolle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

I was born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia and moved to the U.S. in the year 2000. Always inspired by art and design, I studied Computer Arts Animation and then got a degree in Advertising from the University of Florida. Being of Colombian and Lebanese descent has allowed me to interact with many aspects of juxtaposed cultures, which in turn, encouraged me to create works based on these experiences, world travels, and my own personal emotions.

Last year, I experienced a unilateral sudden deafness along with other symptoms such as numbness of the right side of my head and debilitating vertigo episodes. I had been in and out of the hospital trying to figure out what was wrong, until earlier this year, I was finally diagnosed with Meniere’s Disease, a chronic vestibular (inner ear) condition with no known cure. The most prominent symptoms of this condition include a sensation of ear fullness, dizziness, vertigo, nausea, fluctuating hearing loss, and tinnitus. Episodes of vertigo can strike at any time without warning and this uncertainty offer triggers anxiety and depression.

As a result of this experience, I created a painting series titled The Colors of Sound where I visually interpret sound energy, frequencies, and movement using highly-pigmented acrylic inks and paints mixed with water and other mediums mimicking how sound travels.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

Living with a chronic condition hasn’t been easy. As an artist and entrepreneur, I strive to put all my energy and enthusiasm in every project I become involved with. Art has always been my passion and is now my greatest coping mechanism.

Today, I continue battling Meniere’s Disease and its debilitating effects, but this experience has given me a bigger purpose in life and a stronger voice. My goal is to continue to raise awareness about sudden hearing loss, balance disorders, and invisible conditions like mine through art that communicates and engages the public.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.

To date, I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to collaborate with animal welfare campaigns as well as education and health research initiatives among other causes. Nevertheless, I am now proudly raising awareness about this particular cause so dear to my heart: Hearing loss and vestibular (balance-related) disorders after experiencing this unfortunate conditions myself. I invite you to learn more about these conditions, they are more common than we realize. Almost every family has a member suffering from a condition similar to these.
