Today we’d like to introduce you to Moniece Brown.
Moniece, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always had a passion for fashion and beauty from a young age. I graduated College from Stephens College with a B.A. in Fashion Communications. I gained lots of experience in the Beauty and Fashion Industries. I worked for some of the top Cosmetics companies in the industry, for example, Sephora and NARS Cosmetics in Miami. I spent lots of time at Aventura Mall doing exclusive events and meeting some of the top Makeup Artist in the industry, it was a great time and that is where I gained lots of my experience and the artistry of the business. I would enjoy listening to all of my client’s stories and experiences. These ladies came from all walks of life and backgrounds but one thing that they all had in common was their love for cosmetics and beauty. This intrigued me and knew that I was definitely in the right industry. I loved helping these women feel absolutely beautiful.
As a makeup artist, I knew I loved lipstick. As a Makeup Artist, when you apply makeup to a client, lipstick is always the last to be applied to the face and ties the entire look together. The lipstick color you choose is absolutely crucial to compliment and complete the look. I always was so excited about the lipstick application on my clients. But even more so, I had an addiction to lipstick myself which I can now admit. So, it was only natural for me to start my own lipstick line.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been smooth and I always continue to learn more every single day about myself and my business. The biggest challenges are just getting people to believe in your brand and vision as much as I do. As well as just learning to stand out and always being creative because the beauty industry is highly competitive. The best advice I have for young women who are in the beginning stages of their journey is to always stay focused and passionate and believe in yourself. And don’t be afraid to take risks and rejection. It’s all apart of the business. The rejection is what always gives me the drive and hunger to really succeed and be successful. The sky is literally the limit.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into M. Beauty Cosmetics story. Tell us more about the business.
M. Beauty Cosmetics is a Luxury Lipstick Line specializing exclusively in Gluten free, paraben free, and Animal Cruelty-free Products. We specialize in unique and playful colors for lipstick addicts. We currently have five different formulations. Liquid Matte Lipstick, Liquid Metallic Lipstick, Lipgloss which ingredients include coconut oil and sunflower seed extracts, Velvet Lipstick, and Classic Matte Lipstick. As a brand, we pride ourselves in being an environmentally friendly and responsible brand. It is so important to be aware of what you are putting on your face. Lipsticks are very intimate because they are touching your mouth it is very important to be aware of what ingredients you are ingesting into your body. Some big box brands are not interested in the customers best interest. We are always interested in our customers first. That is one of the things that sets us apart from other brands. We also love building a personal relationship with our customers and teaching them about our products and helping them find the perfect color for any and every occasion. No matter if it’s for a special occasion, working at the office or a girls night out. We cater to all customers from all walks of life!
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Female leadership is very vulnerable at times. Lots of times in the beauty industry it’s very competitive and the industry has just as many men dominating it as well. I love the fact that this industry can bring everyone together but at times the biggest barriers in the industry can be just not having the support from fellow female leaders, if we don’t ban together and support each other, then we will fail as an industry as a whole. I have been blessed to have some dynamic female leaders and mentors in my life. The first one being my mother she has always been a great example of female leadership. Then, my other mentors throughout the years have been dynamic. Thanks to Sharon Miller (Owner The Gown Gallery Kansas City) and Jan Carroll (Owner Boca Raton Bridal).
