Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaisa Kerwin.
Kaisa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been a ninja… I started Tae Kwon Do at age 4 and became a Black Belt at age 8. I trained my heart out and competed in over 100 tournaments even making it to the Junior Olympics! Once I finished high school, I enrolled in Flight School and became a fully licensed Multi-Engine, Instrument-Rated Commercial Pilot. I flew commercial for six years. I realized I wasn’t doing what I loved which was helping people and teaching. That’s when I switched directions and opened up Kaisa’s Kickboxing in 2009. I grew and grew and eventually opened up even bigger and better – and that was the birth of The Fit Shop.
Has it been a smooth road?
Most of my struggles were self-inflicted. I finally admitted I was an alcoholic and had a dependency on other substances. I just couldn’t quit. I tried everything and finally… I did stop. It was like this spiritual awakening I had – not to mention all the trouble that comes with that lifestyle. I was so tired of living that way! I got sober. July 12, 2009 everything changed. I finally realized I am good enough just being me and that I didn’t need ANYTHING to be amazing. Just be honest about who I am, and that is enough. Today, I have nine years clean!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am really the most proud of the community we’ve created. We have a safe space for anyone to come to. We are judgment-free and are just kind and loving. The energy is what sets us apart. There is no ego… I think what sets us apart is just that. We care. We know your name. We know your goals. Your needs. Your modifications. A lot of gyms these days just don’t care. There isn’t anything personal. You’re a number. You’re in/out. At The Fit Shop, we ensure everyone feels like they’re at home – with their family. That is truly what keeps us PACKED with the most loyal clients ever!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely. There is a huge demand for fitness. And there is room for everyone. The Fit Shop is surrounded by other gyms. And I love it. I think everyone has a space. Every trainer out there has something people will be attracted to. And I encourage it. I will say, however, there is a HUGE difference between being a trainer, and being a business owner I love being both.
