Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Bernal.
Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I came to Miami 12 years ago, very young and hungry to study something that I felt passionate about. Thus, I went to the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and found PHOTOGRAPHY as a major; I completely fell in love with it!
I studied for two years, and meanwhile, I was assisting a local photographer to whom I am forever grateful for giving me the opportunity. Getting straight into the market and understanding the business while assisting well-known photographers is the best way to learn things that you’ll never learn in a classroom.
I graduated in 2010 and I immediately started working as a photographer. My work is mostly focused on family and kids, and because of that, I was able to work for almost four years as a BTS photographer for Nickelodeon.
Since 2016 I have been working with new families in Medellin and Miami, capturing their best memories, creating their forever lasting moments and enjoying my job to the fullest. Thanks to photography, I have been able to meet a lot of friends, to create beautiful relationships with some clients, follow families’ as they grow from their pregnancy and all the way through their action-packed superhero birthdays.
Photography is my passion and it is a job that I respect and honor; it has become part of who I am, and I love it!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think that when you are a freelancer, the road is never smooth. You have to try your best to create a name inside the community; the word of mouth in our market is key, even more so when you are working with kids. One of the biggest struggles that every photographer faces is to find that some photographers don’t really respect the job as you do. “We can’t give our job for free” – I learned this back when I was studying and I have honored that industry motto throughout these years.
Laura Bernal Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company carries my first an last name: Laura Bernal Photography. As a mom I learned how to enjoy the best moments with kids; as a photographer, I learned how to capture them. Everything I do in my company carries my own personal touch; from capturing that timeless moment with my camera, to delivering a packed photo album.
My photoshoots are done mostly with natural lighting and in very friendly environments. Kids can jump, play and run as much as they can, while I find how to capture spontaneous expressions and lovely images.
I’m proud of what Laura Bernal Photography has become. People who know me, know that I really do enjoy the photoshoot as much as they do. The whole process is delightful and I try to transmit that with every image that my client receives.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In general, success is loving what you do. In my case as a Family photographer, success is working again and again with your clients, seeing your work in their living rooms or bedrooms, and feeling emotional when you get that appreciative text or call after a job well done. That, for me, is success.
