Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Simmons.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in Texas and currently live in Miami, FL. I have an educational background in Environmental Science and Architecture. My work is influenced by nature, social structures, stereotypes and the Brutalist Architecture movement of the 1950’s.
Childhood walks through the piney woods of East Texas inspired my creativity. I saw a parallel between the urban neighborhoods of Houston Texas and the destructive yet necessary growth patterns of a plant by the name Berchemia scandens. This encounter was the catalyst that sparked an ongoing interest in art, architecture, and nature.
Please tell us about your art.
My current work explores common building materials such as concrete, wood, and aluminum. I create pieces that blur the lines between painting, wall relief, and sculptural installation.
The ongoing series (PERCEPTION) encourages the viewer to interact with each piece. Investigating what’s behind, beneath, or under the surface. The series stimulates curiosity, with an intention to challenge social categorization and stereotyping.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success for me is achieving fulfillment, happiness and possibly making a living from what you create. I think an artist needs to be focused, dedicated and persistent with their work.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am a resident artist at Bakehouse Art Complex. My studio is located on the grounds of the facility, but separate from the main building. This location is a working studio but open for visits upon request.
During Art Basel Miami / Miami Art Week, I will be showing with Jankossen Contemporary at Art Miami.
