Meet Camille Kaye

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camille Kaye.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a Jamaican-born and raised Singer/Songwriter. I fell in love with music before I was old enough to understand it. Riding in the car to prep school with Mariah Carey’s ‘Vision of Love’ on blast, I felt like someone understood all the feelings I swore I had all on my own.

Growing up in a culture that only celebrates Dancehall and Reggae music I thought my R&B roots had no hope of growing into a career that would be authentic to my inner being. So, I buried my voice and tried to pursue other endeavors. I became known as the dancer who wanted to be a pilot in high school and continued on that path until I graduated.

When I finally got the courage to sing for an audience other than my bathroom curtains I found myself in ‘Dutty Wine’ producer, Supahype’s studio. Shy, nervous and on display for a room full of strangers watching Passa Passa (a classic, explicit Dancehall party), I sang my first written Reggae love song, and the rest was history.

Since then I’ve been honored to grace stages for 10s of thousands of patrons at West Palm Beach Sunfest, Wynwood Life Street Festival and Hollywood ArtsPark as well as legendary Miami spots like The Stage, Hard Rock Centerstage, and Revolution Live. I’ve also been privileged to have intimate exchanges at Macaya Gallery and Speak Fridays.

The music journey so far has allowed me to collaborate with dope creatives dabbling in House, Dance, Hip-Hop, Rap and Reggae and I’ve loved every experience. Currently, though, I have my talents wrapped up in what I like to call Dancehall R&B. Working with producer Bassline Rock Music Inc has reconnected me to the UK, and I’m super excited about what we’ve released so far and what we have coming when I get back into the studio!

Please tell us about your art.
Well…to be honest, being a Singer/Songwriter is not where I intended to be. I never liked writing stories in school, interpreting poems or ANYTHING literature related. I always gravitated towards Math. But as a singer, unless you have a writer on call, you won’t be singing at all so out of necessity it happened. Funny thing is…now it’s my release. Writing is therapy. I say over and over how nerve-wracking it is sometimes to put out music because it’s my diary on display.

I listen to tracks from producers and the ones I write most easily to usually connect to some experience I’m having, I had, or want to have. Then it just pours out. My hope is that people feel the same way I did riding to school listening to Mariah like they’re not alone in their personal lives. The things they don’t want to say out loud, I have…and they connect with that on a level that makes them feel like we’re the same.

As much as I’d like to make a great living doing what I love, stacking bands isn’t the goal. I make music because when I needed a connection, it did that for me. When I’m hurt and want to just cry I have a song, when I’m in love and feel amazing I have a song. When I feel like no one understands what I’m going through, I have a song. If I can reach even one person that way, then it means I’m accomplishing the mission. No lie though…a Grammy would be nice. Lmao!

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
I think it’s hard to pick the biggest challenge. Every artist is going to struggle with insecurity, money, support, a loyal team, people being in it for the long haul with them and understanding it doesn’t happen overnight. Also, people not believing in them, naysayers, haters, competition, consistency.

The list is endless, and every struggle is major. It doesn’t matter if you’re into music, dance, painting, poetry or staring a business. It’s not easy doing something outside of what society deems “credible” like the traditional job route. Not saying it’s easy to become a doctor either but… the struggle is different. I think maybe persevering regardless of the endless, relentless obstacles might be the biggest challenge, especially when there’s nothing tangible like a degree within a specified timeline at the end to represent “hey you’ve made it”.
