Today we’d like to introduce you to Glayson LeRoy.
Glayson, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a graphic designer. And since 2008 or so I have been attending and watching the transformation of Wynwood during the Art Basel weekends. So it was only natural that I put together a collective along with my friends who all paint in Wynwood. So move forward to Feb 2016 and I receive a call from a friend looking for a wall in my home town Delray Beach for an artist who is now my good friend Jules Muck (Muck Rock). I was able to get her a spot. That exchange led to our first ever pop up show StairWell Visuals in Delray Beach. Together with my friend John Griffin (Venom) we put on a show like Delray Beach has never seen. With multiple artists from Wynwood, Palm Beach and Broward. From then on we have done more pop ups and just last year we curated the TrackSide Walls in Wynwood and started WyMAC (Wynwood Mural Artist Cooperative) with Wynwood land developer Ron Bloomberg.
Has it been a smooth road?
As smooth as one can expect. Some of the struggles is dealing with people wanting artists to paint for exposure without compensation. Sure the guys will do it here and there, but it doesn’t mean people (potential clients) should approach artists with that as their main goal. Artists need to get paid for their work. But I have to say that for us at Galera Collective this is something that now happens less which is nice.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Galera Collective was founded in 2016 by myself and John Griffin. With our 10+ years of industry experience revealed that many creatives, as freelancing solopreneurs focused on their art, were missing opportunities essential to profitably selling their work and scaling their businesses.
Galera Collective’s focus is twofold: supporting local creatives in getting their work advantageously displayed and sold by marketing them across South Florida and beyond; and offering businesses and brands access to a stable of creatives across multiple disciplines including, but not limited to, artists, photographers, videographers, and graphic designers for services and special events.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes. In general I think South Florida is a great place for entrepreneurs. And it’s just getting better in the Tri County.
