Conversations with the Inspiring Adrienne Genus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrienne Genus.

Adrienne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always knew I wanted to be a hairstylist. I followed the traditional path, graduated college, and ended up working in jobs I hated or wasn’t passionate about. While studying for the GMAT, I decided to do what I wanted to do and pursue Cosmetology. The rest is history, I guess.

Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not! There were days I asked myself if I was crazy. Then they’re other days it’s absolutely fulfilling and gratifying. One of my early struggles was putting my ego aside and accepting constructive criticism and putting in work as an assistant. My advice is to soak up as much knowledge from a mentor as you can, put that pride aside and intern/assist or apply for an apprenticeship. Every master was once a beginner.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Shear Genus, The Salon story. Tell us more about the business.
Blow out & Silkpress pro, specializing in Micro-link Extensions (braidless & individual) and Tape Extensions.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Salons and other businesses offer apprenticeships and assistant opportunities. I’ve worked in salons that specialize in techniques I wanted to learn, and stylists I wanted to emulate. Networking is key! Can’t stress it enough. So attend industry shows, workshops, and classes, and work with other like-minded artists.
