Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevon ‘Tre’ Henderson.
Trevon ‘Tre’, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
This journey began years ago and my Grandparents are to thank. I grew up in a Christian home (attending a traditional Black church in Liberty City/Brownsville-small, nothing like the size of today’s mega churches) and attending church services wasn’t an option, it was a mandate. Though I initially didn’t understand much, the joy in going was to listen to the music and to watch the musicians have an amazing time creating that music. They had a way with the crowd, regardless of the fluctuating size of the crowd.
I don’t remember the exact moment my Mom and Grandparents discovered I could sing, but I remember being in a trance watching the church drummer and desiring to play the drums. At age seven, my grandparents bought my first drum set as a Christmas gift. I remember my Mom playing great music in my house. Earth, Wind, and Fire (EWF), Aretha Franklin, Prince, Luther Vandross, Elton John, The Gap Band, and so many others. The first CD I ever purchased with my own money was a Stevie Wonder compilation album and I would mimic his singing. So there was all this amazing music around me. I eventually sang in the church choir, became one of the Directors, and became Praise and Worship Leader. We tended to stay grounded because along with music at church, we were also made to volunteer in feeding the homeless and any other outreach ministry that required sacrificing ourselves and our time.
As I grew, I did well in school (Gifted/Magnet programs, etc.), worked in a few different industries, eventually earned that 1st college degree, but continued to love music. Having been exposed to so many styles of music and with all of the church music discipline (anyone who has ever been in a choir in a traditional Black church knows that the choir training is like going to the military, it’s tough, you do what you’re told when you’re told, and if you mess up you will be publicly reprimanded) I decided I wanted to sing professionally. I auditioned for a few people and landed a job singing and emcee’ing for corporate events and weddings and I’ve been consistent ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to greatness/being fulfilled/living out one’s dream is rarely ever smooth. I recall going on an audition to sing background for an Artist. I genuinely felt I performed well, just as well as the others I’d heard. I did not get the job. Each disappoint has the capacity to breed doubt, doubt in one’s own ability and gift. The crazy thing is that I found out later on that not being chosen was not at all a reflection of my abilities or lack thereof. I wasn’t chosen because I was young (and I looked even younger). I was in my early 20s and I looked like I was 15. This wasn’t going to work standing next to two other background singers (females) who were grown women and had curvy bodies to go with it (LOL).
Another difficult time was unexpectedly losing my younger brother (Trenard Mobley) due to health complications in 2013. He was in great physical condition, in fact he was a professional dancer, having (among other successes) toured with the Broadway Musical ‘Cats’. He played Alonzo. He was a musical talent as well so it was difficult to move on after suffering that loss.
I watched my grandmother bake a cake when I was much younger. I realized that all kinds of ingredients that aren’t sweet are required to bake a cake. It is in part how I view disappointments/obstacles. We want the sweetness of the cake but every ingredient, even salt, is needed to yield that desired taste. Such is life.
Please tell us about Tre Henderson.
I have the amazing pleasure of performing (singing/hosting/emcee’ing) for Weddings and Corporate events. I get to be a major part of the most memorable times in the lives of various people and companies. I’m exceptionally good at it!
I’m experienced:
I’ve recorded with Pharrell Williams on the Oscar Nominated track ‘Happy’ (background vocalist)
I’ve done live background vocals Michael McDonald at the HardRock Live in Hollywood, FL
I’ve performed live background vocals for Grammy winning Gospel Artists (Karen Clark-Sheard, Dorinda Clark-Cole,–Byron Cage, Dewayne Woods)
I’ve entertained a sold-out crowd, opening for Comedian George Lopez.
I sing and entertain in such a way that makes people get involved and have a good time. I also get to do it alongside other great singers and musicians (Rachel Brown, Nathaniel Stokes), currently working with the Miami band called ‘The Social’ of Elan Artists. I treat each event as if it is my own and I bring intelligence, an extensive understanding of events, humor, and problem solving/critical thinking skills. Events are organized and planned and many go off without a hitch. However, things beyond our control happen and every so often I have to think and act fast and resolve an issue before the client is even aware that an issue or potential issue existed. That is what I do and that absolutely sets me apart. Anyone who has ever worked with me will make the same declaration. In fact, I am well trusted by many planners that they don’t ‘babysit’ me throughout the night. They go over timelines with me and entrust me to handle what pertains to me while being able to focus on the many other moving parts of the client’s event. My emcee skills/personality have blessed me to co-host a Los Angeles based talk-radio show on 111.3fm, entitled ‘Life with Nina’. So in the past few years I’ve added ‘radio personality’ to my list of accomplishments.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could start over, I would take the route I’ve chosen much sooner. I would be more fearless. I’d probably take more risks earlier on, knowing that everything will eventually work out favorably.
