Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Carney.
Margaret, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have been married for 61 happy years and have 8 children, 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. My Family is most important but my life has been filled with many opportunities and challenges. My husband and I were in business for 30 years, in which I was a secretary and bookkeeper. Three of our sons help with the plumbing and heating.
Through the business, we had the opportunities to travel and going to Europe ignited my interest in Art again. All of which kept me very busy but I always like to draw and wanted to be an artist. So when the children were older I took some art courses at Niagara County community college. A few years later I studied with Maryann Waligue Doering oil painting in Buffalo.
With her help, I entered art shows and won many awards. I have sold paintings to individuals and some corporations in Buffalo. We have traveled in our motorhome all over the country and spend six months in Sebring Florida and six months home In North Tonawanda. Painting is my favorite hobby next to gardening.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I love to paint Big and in the style of trompe l’oeil. I try to pick subjects that are different and interesting. I love doing interesting shadows. I like a challenge something I’ve never done before. I do commissions but I really have to be interested in what they want me to paint. If the subject doesn’t turn me on I will not do it. I paint because I love to, it’s a great hubby
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
To define success is hard because I’m still learning. I am never quite satisfied with most of my paintings. It’s a work in progress. I paint because I love it and it’s fun. To me that’s success.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
