Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Elena Fuentes.
Maria Elena, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started designing and creating headpieces when my daughter Marilé got married. She has always been my muse in a way. After everyone saw her headpiece and it got so many compliments, I decided to make one of a kind pieces for family and friends. Slowly, the pieces and brand started taking off which led to establishing the Maria Elena Headpieces and Accessories brand, hence, opening the workshop. That was over 25 years ago. Today we are in stores worldwide and our pieces have walked the most famous runways in the world.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have been very fortunate in many ways. However, we did go through the growing pains of most businesses. We have made many sacrifices along the way, many long hours, and hard work. However, it has all been worth it.
Maria Elena Headpieces & Accessories – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a headpieces and accessories company. All our headpieces and accessories are unique handcrafted works of art. Even though currently we have Ready-to-Wear and a line for men, we specialized first in the bridal market. One of our proudest achievement was our 20 year anniversary book, which celebrated the 20 years we have thrived and established ourselves as a recognized brand in the industry. Our pieces are all unique designs, made entirely with Swarovski crystals and the finest metals that never tarnish.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success is defined by the hard work put in your business. Consistency is also key to achieve your goals and get as far as we have. We define our success by the years we have been in the business and how much we have had a steady growth. We are also kind of a family company. My sister and my husband work very closely to me. My Fashion Director, Gisele Del Busto, has been with us for around 15 years, and so have many of our employees. I think a key factor in success is surrounding yourself with people that you can trust, and are as talented and hard-working as you are. And of course, you all have to love what you do, so you can do it with passion and always give it your all.
