Today we’d like to introduce you to La Goony Chonga.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a Cuban American songwriter/rapper and entertainer. I have been showcasing my talents since late 2012. I have released 3 solo projects since then and my 4th solo album “Dinero” which is all Spanish will drop in September 2018. I am partners with rapper Bootychaaain in our business “Gwallah Gang International” which will soon be one of the first female-owned record labels. In 2015, I began to make music in my native language which is Spanish. I have consistently made efforts to make sure my career continued to grow. Since making music in Spanish, I expanded my fanbase overseas to countries like Europe, Germany, Brazil and South America. For 2 years in a row, my music was played on runways for well-known fashion designers. In 2016, designer Sadak featured my song “Lotto Money” ft. Bootychaaain on his runway show for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. In 2017, designer Alexander Wang had his models walk to my song “Tengo Dinero” for his fall collection at New York Fashion Week. In March 2018, I became the first female rapper to show off her pregnancy in my music video “No Effort Remix”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
So far, it has been an amazing yet challenging venture for me. It is always fun being able to do what you love and show it to the world. It’s very challenging when you are just starting because you have to put in work and invest a lot of energy into your craft in order to succeed. It takes a lot of time investment as well as financial investment. In 2014, I became a stripper in New York City and used that as not only inspiration but also as a means to invest in my career financially. The advice I would give to women who are just starting their journey is to stay consistent, determined, focused and committed. Be around people who genuinely support you and your vision and build your team! Also, to be about your business. A lot of creatives forget that there’s a business side to every craft. Make sure you educate yourself and learn ways to monetize your craft in order to benefit from it as much as you can. The whole point is to make a living off of doing what you love and sometimes that means having to some of the dirty work ( the tedious little things that make a difference) in order to have success.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with La Goony Chonga, Gwallag Gang International – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am mainly a songwriter/ performer. I am well known for my abilities to create music in both English and Spanish and making music that can give women confidence and feel good. Throughout the years, I created my own unique sound and have influenced many artists after me. Many people credit me for being the queen of “treaggaeton” which is Spanish rap over trap style beats rather than the typical reggaeton beat. What sets me apart from others is that I am constantly evolving as an artist and finding new ways to engage with my fans and make them feel like they can turn to me or my music for anything.
Who have you been inspired by?
The women that have inspired me are women like Jennifer Lopez, Selena, Madonna, and Celia Cruz. Each one of them left a mark on this world. I love how JLO is a triple threat and entrepreneur. She dances, sings, makes clothes, host her own TV show and is an actress all at once. Selena had the ability to touch peoples hearts and her style was impeccable. Madonna is the definition of a living legend. I love how controversial she is and how she changed the game. Its amazing to me that a woman over 50 is still popping splits on stage. That alone sets her apart from many. Celia Cruz is inspirational to me not only because she is a Cuban woman like me, but her voice and style moved people. She created such “feel good” music and the message she gave in her music was always positive. I take inspiration from each one of them.
