Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey McNutt.
Casey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to south Florida in March 2017 from the British Virgin Islands where my husband and I are managers/partners in a Scuba Diving business. We worked with our team from our new home but after Hurricane Irma destroyed that business I needed to find a way to earn income while we rebuilt the business and the island. I had already had an online mermaid subscription box business for a year so the goal was to focus more on that and expand the concept. I wanted an opportunity to be closer to the community and after passing an empty space in a shopping center near my neighborhood, the idea to put a storefront for my own mermaid obsession was sparked. South Florida is a great place to celebrate the mermaid lifestyle and I wanted to create an amazing place for all mermaids to find treasures! Mermaid Cove was born and we opened on February 2nd, 2018. We specialize in all things mermaid and have added another subscription box to the mix as well as our online store.
I’m proud to be a part of the community here and a resident of this beautiful state. Opening my dream shop has made it that much sweeter! In addition to the online and retail shop, we visit as many events and festivals around the area to bring the magic of mermaids to everyone!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Finances – after losing my main income.

We are inspired by mermaids and their world – we sell treasures inspired by the ocean and all items that are mermaid-themed. In addition to the retail shop in Deerfield Beach, we have our online store, and a subscription box named after the shop where we’ll deliver ocean-inspired mermaid vibes directly to your door!
I’m proud of our imagination, our commitment to our theme, the mermaids we have met who are part of our mermaid family. My team and the other mermaids we work with are incredible and inspiring to us daily! Mermaid Cove tries to not just be a retail sales company but also a place for magical experiences. Our events and live mermaid appearances bring all ages of mermaids together to celebrate! I’m proud of how we make our customers feel 🙂
What were you like growing up?
Grew up in the country – spent a lot of time riding 4-wheelers and fishing with my dad. I was a typical East Texas kid who was in a band, twirling, and wanted to be cool! During summers, I was unable to hang out with many other kids because of where I lived (so far out of town), but my mom was instrumental in my imagination and creativity. She made us (my sister and I) do a report about something that interested us – so we went to our local library and checked out books and VHS videos. One summer, I did my report on sharks! I became totally obsessed with the ocean – which I hadn’t ever seen. I wanted to be like the scientists who studied fish and coral-like every child, I wanted to be a Marine Biologist! I wanted to be a scuba diver so badly! In college, I became scuba certified and worked my way up the ranks. I earned my Instructor rating after graduate school and my husband and I took off in early 2003 for the BVI to be dive instructors. Diving every day to my job put me underwater where I knew I belonged… I was as close to a mermaid as I thought I could ever be! My love for diving and the ocean has been the drive for almost everything I’ve done in my adult life – including owning a mermaid store!
