Meet Alex Cohen of Synkronized Films in Miami Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Cohen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alex. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I founded Synkronized in 2000 in Paris, France. Originally as a one-stop between the Movie majors and independents, for wholesale DVDs direct to stores, quickly becoming top three One-stop-shops in France. Gained by its success, the company evolved into a full Production and Distribution house, acquiring feature films and documentaries from all over the world and releasing them with major partners such as Paramount Entertainment, and Sony, among others.

In 2004, I expanded Synkronized and moved its main offices to Miami, to center on the US Movie market. With partnerships with E1 Entertainment and Millenium US, Lionsgate, and Sony Pictures, Our company became a US independent producer and distributor for the Theatrical Marketplace, TV, VOD, Digital, DVD and SVOD.

With a catalog of over 200 movies and counting, and partnerships with the all key partners of the entertainment industry in the United States, we are proving that quality independent productions can still find its audience when strong distribution tools are coupled with aggressive PR plans. Thanks to a unique formula and business strategy, the company has never stopped expanding and acquiring market shares.

Since 2010, I have been named as a board member and a judge for the International Emmys (c) at the Academy of Television, Arts, and Sciences. I have been judging a main category for the past 8 years.

Also a member of The American Film Institute and many other associations, I try to help independent filmmaking anytime, anywhere.

In 2016, Synkronized partnered with The Dream Factory Group, a China and US major production conglomerate, raising its level of films to wide Theatrical releases, producing films like “Rock Dog” or the upcoming family movie “Saving Flora” set to be released in 2018. Our last production is called “Luce”, starring Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer and Tim Roth.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, to say the least. Between reinventing myself and my company in a new country, the constant fight for awareness that the film industry needs. Franchises closing while piracy rose, a Florida industry playing personal, and the image of dream sellers that some investors have of us are real and very present monsters we have to fight on a daily basis. The road to success in the movie industry is not a simple one to say the least.

Synkronized Films – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We produce and acquire films for US and worldwide distribution. We have no particular genre and try to stay as mainstream as possible, but we also know when to take a risk and fight for a good movie, no matter how small it is. I am proud to have released over 200 films, that got more than 80 nominations and over 50 of the world’s main awards distinction. We are the only full and all medias distributor in Florida, and one of the very few independents left in our country. We are special because we hear and speak directly with producers and filmmakers, and make their dreams a reality.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
There are many ways to define success. Being successful is being happy, that’s the fact. Having strong personal and professional goals will keep your stamina up. My goal is to win 2 Oscars with one or several of our films, and I am reminding it to myself every day. It takes strong flexibility and drive, but as long as you persist, you’re climbing.
