Delilah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Delilah Johnson was established 9 years ago as a custom dress collection with a focus on party dresses. It was a natural lane to start in because I began designing and making party dresses for me and my friends in college so that we could be fly even though we were too broke to shop. We had a steadily growing client base for the custom dresses for a few years and after doing a fashion show in Miami we started to get picked up by boutiques. The store placements were exciting and eye-opening. We learned very quickly that we needed to change our operational structure and production methods if we wanted to be in both the custom and the Ready to Wear lanes.
We took a break for a few years to regroup, and reestablish the focus of the brand. Today, Delilah Johnson is a wedding and custom bridal collection and a Ready to Wear collection for the on-the-go woman.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This journey has been amazing, but the road has not been smooth. It’s dangerous to start a business based on passion and focused on customization for individual style before really establishing the long-term goal and a clear brand identity, yet that is how we began. The early years were spent trying to make it clear that a design for specific customers was not truly where the brand aesthetic was heading. I had to take a step back and away from that to determine what Delilah Johnson should be and learn to say no sometimes, in order to stay focused on projects that made sense for the brand. The evolution of the retail landscape is a constant challenge. There is a tendency for people to have short attention spans, which makes it more difficult to gain and maintain a steady customer following.

Delilah Johnson is a women’s wear brand that creates for the on-the-go woman to live in every day and to celebrate her big moments. The brand is comprised of a wedding collection and RTW collection. I am the designer behind the brand and specialize in draping as a technique, so the garments are designed with the fit on a woman’s silhouette in mind. I love to blend bold colors and patterns so that each piece makes a statement.
The launch of the wedding collection is what I am most proud of because we started as a design house for party and event dresses and are now playing a role in one of the biggest moments of a woman’s life with her wedding gown or gowns for her squad.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We will focus more on the wedding collection as the lead for the brand, so you will see more gowns and innovation in bridal accessories in the future.
