Today we’d like to introduce you to Doris Glenn Richards.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. At age 14, I moved to South Florida to attend St. Andrews School where I trained as a diver with Olympic coaches. I earned a full scholarship to the University of Miami went on to compete around the world on behalf of the University of Miami and the United States. I was the number one ranked female springboard diver in the U.S. for three consecutive years. That experience taught me valuable lessons about work ethic and allowed me to see beautiful parts of the world. I was even featured in Sports Illustrated and Harper’s Bazaar and was on the cover of Seventeen! It was a special time in my life that influenced who I am today and my love of fitness.
After I graduated from the University of Miami (with a B.A. in Marketing), I moved to Los Angeles and worked in marketing and as what would today be known as a brand ambassador. I was sought out by brands for commercials and infomercials based on my diving career. While working in Beverly Hills, I met my husband, Paul, and we moved to New York together and started our family. We now have three children and live in Miami Beach.
Moving to Miami in 2013 was the catalyst that led me to finally make Sexy Sweaties happen. I’d thought about a product like this for years living in New York but it was Miami, with such variety of workout options and year-round bikini weather that really inspired me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Doing business in Miami has its unique challenges… Hurricane Irma interrupted our launch! The storm caused delays in shipping and almost caused us to cancel a launch event. In the end, the product made it and the party went on as planned. It turned out to be a huge success. I think after so much disruption to daily routines due to the storm, people were excited to have fun and celebrate something new.
Sexy Sweaties – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Most people are now familiar with the term “ath-leisure.” Sexy Swaties are ath-lingerie! There are so many options available for cool, sexy workout clothes but nothing in the way of undergarments. I wanted something that was as sexy as the rest of my lingerie that was functional so I could get from the gym to the rest of my day without pausing in between to change. Sexy Sweaties a patent pending panty designed to get you from workout to wherever in two snaps.
Sexy Sweaties are lace look panty made of breathable nylon – a workout-friendly fabric for its moisture reduction capabilities – that can be taken on and off via two small clasps. What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is setting a goal and achieving it. You learn this as an athlete early on when training and can apply it to every aspect of your life – professional and personal.
