Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Farias.
Jenny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Miami to Cuban parents, so I grew up in a household that was all about cooking and entertaining. As a child, I remember my mother—who calls me “Yenny” to this day—would buy me an entire loaf of Cuban bread to have as “merienda” (a snack) after school. How I did not end up at Jenny Craig by the age of 12, I have no idea!
At the age of 26, I decided to leave Miami in search for more adventure. While my friends were all getting married to their high school sweethearts, I was figuring out what my next travel destination was going to be, what celeb I would rub shoulders with at a hotspot in a new city, and ultimately what career path I was going to embark on.
I quit my job, booked a one-way flight and moved to New York City in search of a bigger life. I quickly figured things out and got a job as a cocktail waitress at a bustling bar, which is where I first got a taste for the hospitality world. I was immediately drawn to the scene and developed a passion for amazing restaurants and craft cocktails. Even as a newbie to New York, I always impressed my friends with how much I knew about where to go eat and drink in such a short time. (The ZAGAT guide was like my Bible.) My stint behind the bar didn’t last long due to my clumsy nature, so I ended up landing a job at a global experiential marketing agency, Momentum Worldwide, which is where I began my career in marketing.
Flash forward to 2015: Back in Miami and craving to be involved in the hospitality industry again, I decided to take the skills I had acquired with content marketing and curating unique experiences for brands and launch my food blog, Goodtella.com, and the rest is history.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been challenging, but also very fulfilling. Food blogging is a very saturated space with a lot of really big accounts and complicated social media algorithms that make it difficult to get noticed. For me, I knew I needed to seek help and build a team of contributors to keep the brand fresh and edgy. Despite some of the challenges I’ve encountered, it’s gotten me involved in a space that I’m very passionate about.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Goodtella.com – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Goodtella.com is a multi-media food and lifestyle blog that publishes content on the best things to do in Miami and beyond. I’m most proud of the creative content we put out, highlighting the best of Miami and other travel destinations across the globe.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how multicultural Miami is. It is a true melting pot of people from different backgrounds and influences, so the opportunities for the culinary, nightlife and travel scenes are endless. I least like that the people of Miami are not your quintessential foodies. It’s hard to keep a concept buzzing, as people are always looking for the next best thing. I’m just here for the good food.
