Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Orchilles.
Alex, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Alejandro Orchilles and I am a filmmaker and photographer from Miami, Florida.
My journey began when I was in high school in 2005. I filmed one of my best friends in a street fight. Yes, you read that correctly… a street fight. I used a small Sony point & shoot camera to film the action and edited the video in Windows Movie Maker. During the fight, my friend dodged a couple of punches that I cut into slow motion and then as he delivered a counter uppercut, I sped it back up to 100% speed. This regular street fight ended up looking like a professional boxing match due to the editing. This is when I realized that my passion was filmmaking and photography.
After becoming aware of what I wanted to pursue, I studied Film and Video at Florida Atlantic University. In 2011, I created my business, Aon Prestige Media. Although I’ve had two different full-time jobs since I started Aon, we’ve been able to maintain it up and running due to the amazing team and clients we’ve worked with.
At Aon Prestige Media, we produce content for all sorts of clients including concerts, commercials, music videos, portraits, weddings, real estate, events, films, sports, product shots, behind the scenes, and much more. We’ve had the honor of working with many popular brands such as Coor’s Light, Miller Lite, Corona, Nissan, Facebook, FC Barcelona Soccer Camps, Baptist Health, and Curtanna. On this journey, we’ve also had the opportunity to work with many artists such as Juanes, Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull, Marc Anthony, Jose Jose, J Balvin, Zion y Lennox, Farruko, Wisin, Yandel, RK El Artista, Gucci Mane, Joe, and many more.
Another part of what we do at Aon, is sell photography prints as decoration for homes, offices, restaurants, and other locations. Aside from Aon, I am also currently running a YouTube channel which focuses on filmmaking, photography, and travel. Since I’ve learned so much from the YouTube community, I’ve decided to give back by creating filmmaking, photography, and business tutorials from my experience along with some travel vlogs and cinematic films. Has it been a smooth road?
The main obstacle that I’ve run into is learning how to operate a successful business. Since I did not go to business school, I’ve solely been learning from my mistakes and consulting my father for certain business decisions. As I mentioned before, YouTube has also been a great help in times of need when learning about the industry and business.
Another challenge has been operating my company for a year and half while working full-time at an advertising agency. In this time, my work week went from 40 hours to around 80 hours total due to many long nights of operating Aon after I’d get off of work and on the weekends. Regardless, I persisted and am now back to running Aon full-time as of June 2018.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Aon Prestige Media story. Tell us more about the business.
The Aon Prestige Media slogan is “you name it, we shoot it.” This means we do it all. Whether it’s a music video, concert, a commercial, portraits, a birthday party, wedding, company overview, or company picnic – we will get it done and deliver the highest quality for our clients.
I’m very proud of a many things that we have achieved – starting with the FC Barcelona Soccer Camps. It began as a project in Ft. Lauderdale but then grew to a nationwide operation in 10 major cities and an international tournament in Barcelona, Spain. This project involved hiring multiple videographers and photographers in each city and having to manage the project from afar.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5 – 10 years, I could see cell phones becoming better and better at portrait / landscape photography so there may be a decline in event, family, portrait shoots. But for the time being, I’m pretty sure most people will prefer to hire professionals.
