Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricio Gonzalez Bezanilla.
Patricio, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born in Chile, I studied Art and also in Spain at Complutense University and I was lucky enough to work with Muñoz-Vera, back in Chile I participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
I arrived in Miami almost 2 years ago, looking to leave my conforde zone. The experience of re-inventing yourself in a new place is liberating and offers you the possibility of reinventing your work, without the backpacks of the near past. As an artist, the absorption of new experiences and information transform it into a nutritious environment for creation.
.
In Miami, things happen very fast, things that take years in other places. Here they spend in a matter of months, it is a very dynamic place. Since I am living in Miami, I have played Basel (one of the most important fairs in the world of art), I exhibited at the fairs of Pinta, West Palm Beach, ArtWynwoody, Boca Raton art fair …… as well as individual and collective exhibitions (including shows Photography with Ernesto Fernández, National Photography Award
Cuban. The truth is I am very happy with many projects, for the short time we have, much better than I imagined to start. The experience of starting from scratch is also liberating in itself and offers you the possibility of reinventing yourself and your work, without the backpacks of the near past.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
All the elements of my work, as a whole and separately, reveal the fears of both sides that survive in our society: the fear of the other, the fear of remaining poor, the fear of being robbed, the fear of the uprising masses, the fear of remaining dominated, the fear of losing privileges, the fear of never having them. Fear is a basal characteristic of neoliberalism; whose starting point and end is the methodical individualism imposed. In this individualism, we “progress” progressively losing confidence, urban spaces of encounter, and we gain barriers of protection, of segregation: It is the crisis, which happens when the governors have replaced the word PEACE with the word SECURITY, erasing of the social horizon the possibility of a collective and integral construction.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
For the artist, always the generation of a language consistent with his historical minute is the biggest challenge. Only a personal and recognizable point of view achieves the impact that true art can produce.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
At this moment I am exhibiting in Eduardo Lira Galeria in Wynwood and I’m preparing another solo exhibition in Chile with the same gallery. The best way to help is educating about the art world and collecting contemporary artists, a society without culture is a fragile society. My Studio is located in Wynwood and we always have the doors open for those interested in art.
