Today we’d like to introduce you to Pat Shimon Jayme.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Pat Shimon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began training Jiu-Jitsu under Professor Rodrigo Mendes in the beginning of 2004.
The training system and the Academy’s atmosphere was differentiated, welcoming. After practicing Martial Arts since the age of 4, and holding black belts in many disciplines, I decided to halt my training to pursue advancement in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At the end of 2012, after competing and teaching under the RMBJJ banner for years, I was awarded the highly coveted rank of black belt in BJJ, and became the head instructor at the Coral Springs Academy.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Along the way I saw many BJJ schools close their doors. Every time a school closed it broke my heart. BJJ was still unknown to most people, and it was tough introducing it to the families in our area. Having a job during the day and teaching at night meant that I could not dedicate time to the advancement of the sport or growth of our school. Many times, I had to renegotiate with the landlord to keep the doors open. I was courageous and stuck with it, pushed through, and grew the school to a good size. I quit my job and began teaching BJJ full time. In the beginning, I also didn’t have a plan, or a written curriculum, which hurt the retention rate we had. Today I have created 5 different curriculums for our different programs, and have expanded it to include both self-defense and competition aspects of Jiu-Jitsu. Looking back at all the difficulty and the times I thought I wouldn’t make it, and seeing our Academy today, I can say it was worth it.
RMBJJ Coral Springs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We opened our doors in Coral Springs in 2011, but our team has been around for over 15 years teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to families in Brazil, Boston, Palm Beach county and Broward County. With currently 3 locations in South Florida, our Coral Springs facility is centrally located close to Parkland, Coral Springs, Coconut Creek, Margate, Tamarac, North Lauderdale and neighboring cities. We have 5 black belt professors in our Coral Springs location and many assistant instructors.
At RMBJJ we believe Jiu-Jitsu should be available to everyone, no matter how advanced or beginner one may be. We value the family atmosphere in our training facility and will promote Jiu-Jitsu for families, kids and adults.
RMBJJ is a renowned team, member of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation, and many champions have been formed on our mats.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We receive many calls from parents that are concerned about their children being bullied at school or around the neighborhood. In more than a few instances, I was able to sit down with the parents and their kids and hear from them how their self-esteem had been raised, and how they dealt with the bullying, and how happy they were to have found us.
All of these times I felt the proudest one can be. I treat all those children like my own kids, and any of their achievements make me really proud like a parent would be.
