Today we’d like to introduce you to Dayanna Roman.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Since as long as I can remember, I’ve always been drawn to the eccentric. I remember when I was a child, walking out in a jean jacket and red socks as my beach outfit, and my mother making me go back inside to change. From a young age, I’ve been interested in what makes people dress the way they want to dress, ultimately choosing how they present themselves to the world. I’ve always felt a connection to colors, and textures. That is one thing that has always inspired me, as well as my father. My dad, a photographer, was the one that from the age of four years old got me a point and shoot film camera so I could play around it with, he opened up a world to me and believed in me to capture something different. I believe that these are things that inspired me to pick up a camera now, and try to capture the uniqueness, the style, the colors, the textures, the ideas, the memories, that make a person who they are.
Please tell us about your art.
What I create is mostly portraiture on film and also digital. I get inspired myself by colors, textures, music, movies, ideas, cultural references, and popular culture. I try to capture who a person is by the colors they like, the clothes they wear, what their atmosphere feels like, what they listen to and what movies they like. The message I try to create is that whatever character a person chooses to be, who they are, is not just a superficial choice in clothing, but it actually says a lot about who they are inside. They might find inspiration in music, in movies, or their own culture, to wear what they wear and identify with it. Ultimately, in my photography, I want to capture the subject amongst the aura they create for themselves. I want to capture their personality in relationship to their surroundings.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
As an artist, success to me means creating something I can identify with, something my subject can identify with. I don’t necessarily need the entire world to agree with my message, so to me, a successful creation is one which my subject can identify with and is happy with. A success to me, is a work I can feel proud of.
