Meet Andres Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andres Hernandez.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I always loved the arts, in my early high school years I began taking art classes and spent a lot of time drawing, painting and other types of arts. When I was a senior in high school and we were looking at college options I was leaning towards Puerto Rico’s top art school, Escuela de Artes Plasticas y Diseño.

My mother, did not agree with my choice and told me how artist always starve. I took her advice and join and engineering program on another college. I did great my first 2 years in college, but on my third I just lost interest in the engineering field.

I ended up in the US Army, after I finish in the army I moved to Miami where I started working on a number of different jobs. Eventually went to school again and studied air conditioning technology. On that field I work on a few different companies and eventually opened up my own company dedicated to Marine Air Conditioning on Luxury Yacht. The business has been good, but, my artistic bug has always been there.

Since owning my own company my monetary situation improved greatly and I found myself been able to afford things that were a little harder to get before. Having a family, wife and kids is though on a worker’s salary. Anyway, I started looking into photography, with Instagram as a medium to appreciate other photographer’s professionals and armature work, I finally decided to get my first camera.

I started watching YouTube videos and learning on my own, with my camera by my side everywhere I went. I kept shooting and shooting. I learn the in-camera stuff as well as the post editing part of the art. I keep learning and learning and I hope someday I could make Photography my main source of income.

Please tell us about your art.
Photography. I experiment with all aspects of photography. I enjoy nature photography because it helps me get back in touch with nature. I like to use my photography to help bring awareness to our resources, creatures that surround us and the health of our planet.

On the commercial side of it, I’ve been drawn into event photography. I like to use a style of journalistic photography that tells the whole story of the event, focusing on people’s emotions and capturing them.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I have notice a big change in favor of the arts, specially here in South Florida. We know have monthly art events happening almost every week and the respond to them continues to grow. Social media has help artist expose their work in a way never seen before and no longer depend on big galleries or word of mouth alone to get their work seen. I believe cities should strengthen the arts programs in schools and allow the children to developed their creative minds.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have a few Instagram accounts. @vapixphotography (Commercial Work) @soflolense (Street Photography) and my original account @andresjphotography (Nature, Landscapes and Sometimes a selfie or two). I sell prints of any of my photos, cover events in the South Florida Area and create content for advertisers and other media companies.
