Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Howl.
Andy, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Born on Wurtsmith AFB in 1976. Grew up in Lansing and Detroit MI, wanting to be a comic book artist and painter. Attended Savannah College of Art & Design from 94 to 98 where I was exposed to tattooing. I eventually started my own tattoo shop and art gallery/music venue in Fort Myers, FL. My love of black and white underground comics translated into becoming known for illustrative and traditional style black work tattoos (tattoos using only straight black ink). In 2015 I began publishing a yearly coffee table art book series entitled The Devils Reign, which is curated by The High Priest of The Church of Satan, Peter H Gilmore. We are now in our 4th book which focuses on witch themed artwork. I also host weekly music shows at my shop with local and established metal and punk bands, such as The Independents, The Murder Junkies, and The Electric Hellfire Club.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am primarily a black work tattoo artist. I also paint and do illustrations for print, most of my work focuses on lines and illustrative shading. Most of my work features images or of animals or skulls. I think it’s important remember we are all basically animals and that our time here is finite.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
The art market and tattoo industry are both heavily saturated. The best way to get ahead is to focus on finding your own distinct voice and become less aware of stylistic trends.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
