Today we’d like to introduce you to Carissa Berbrick.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Carissa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
First of all, I have always loved sweets. That and a love of art is what drew me to baking and cake decorating. While in college and while working in statistics at a market research company in NYC (yes, statistics…), I experimented a lot with baking at home and took a few baking and cake decorating classes. Eventually, I made the decision to leave my career in statistics and dive into a new career in baking.
About five and a half years ago, I moved to Florida and attended Le Cordon Bleu, receiving a diploma in Patisserie and Baking. I then worked at other bakeries until I finally decided to open up my own bakery about three years ago. I decided to focus on custom cakes because of the artistic element. My favorite cakes to make are wedding cakes and more modern designs.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has, of course, been challenging starting my own business. However, I’m very determined and I have a great support system.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Chic and Sweet Artisan Cakes – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We focus primarily on custom cakes for weddings, birthdays, showers, and many other occasions. Our other specialty is hand decorated sugar cookies, themed for any event. We also make dessert table items such as mini cupcakes, tartlets, shooters, donuts, etc.
One thing that sets us apart is the quality of our products. I’m a perfectionist, and it shows in my work. I fuss over each and every item that I make, making sure it’s the best it can be. One thing that customers really like is my ability to make a buttercream cake nice and smooth without having to use a fondant covering. Also, because I’m a dessert-lover first, I have created all of my recipes myself to taste amazing. (Yes, I still eat my own product all the time!)
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m very happy with where my business is currently. I simply want to continue growing it, slow and steady.
