Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Alison Chesney of Fort Lauderdale

Alison Chesney shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Alison, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Even though no two days are truly the same, most days start the same way with a cup of coffee and catching up on emails. After that, I will do a 30 minute workout with weights, and then I’m ready to truly start my day. Most of my day is dedicated to the business— editing, marketing, accounting, or focusing on my non-profit, Project Beauty of South Florida.

My photoshoots typically happen in the afternoons. On days I’m not shooting, I love cooking a good meal and getting outside for a walk. I try to be disciplined and wrap up work by 6 p.m., though during busy seasons, I’m often back to editing after a late shoot. Years ago, I implemented a strict 10 p.m. cutoff time for editing to make sure I get a chance to relax before bed, and honestly, that change has made a huge difference in my life!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a creative lifestyle portrait photographer based in South Florida, specializing in high school seniors, teens, and personal branding clients. I am deeply passionate about creating artistic, bright, and soulful portraits that authentically showcase each client’s unique personality and story.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Having my first child shaped how I wanted to photograph. I began photographing what I love, and that has carried through in my photography for over 20 years.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self not to pidgeonhole yourself into a traditional profession or career. I started my professional career as an attorney, not even imagining that I could support myself and be successful as a creative. I’ve now been a professional photographer for 22 years after leaving the law, and I couldn’t be happier or more satisfied with my choice.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
It actually is! I’m a pretty open book and will talk about anything about myself, listen to others, and act myself at photoshoots. I’m comfortable in my own skin, and I believe that is reflected when people meet and work with me.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
What would remain would be my relationships with my family and friends, my love for them.
