Pseudo mero on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Pseudo mero shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Pseudo, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Walking in Nature. It feels like I want to get further and to keep amazed at the medicine she provides for us. Enjoying the grandeur of Nature, I find myself walking in and outside in an active meditation. During that process, I discover new shapes, colors, themes to explore, and connections with things I thought I had forgotten.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a visual artist from Boriké (Puerto Rico) living in Naples, Florida. I have more than twenty-five years working with drawings, paintings, murals, printing, and education. My artworks combine formal art studies with experimentation, heavy life observation, and graffiti-inspired techniques. That combination provides an always-evolving set of themes, processes, and exploration. At this moment, I am focused on talking about Nature and ecology with a reuse-reduce state of mind. Representing plants, I delve into the discussion of history, heritage, resistance, resilience, and cultural connections.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My parents. They have devoted their support to us. They always held a creative environment where their three kids thrived in art, and still do. There were notepads, papers of every color and texture, plenty of pencils, pens, markers, glue, rulers, and more. We were surrounded by music all the time. So, I think with their support, they saw that I might continue on a creative path, and here I am.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
Well, there was a moment when I was feeling awkward talking about my love for Nature and how we can make it better while consuming animal products. I am also alarmed by the way the industry mistreats the poor animals just for profit. Because of that, I started to gradually stop consuming them, becoming pescatarian, then vegetarian, and now I’ve been vegan for more than six years. I stopped wearing and using them, too. That helped me to live a lifestyle that goes hand in hand with my art proposal’s philosophy. I did not feel I was being honest with myself, and I almost thought that I was failing my culture or the way I was raised, but in the end, we can modify and grow stronger with this type of decision.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I mean, I am very private, but in terms of how I treat people or how I see things, it’s the same in or outside of home. I observe and analyze everything, and that will have an influence on the way I am going to react most of the time.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I always try to push myself to be the best person and artist that I can be. I mostly work alone, so that requires being focused and not compromising what I am aiming for. In the series of paintings that I am working on right now, I am remembering what I’ve learned when I was a teenager and the artworks that inspired me since then. And, even when my process is structured, there is an important area for improvisation and discovery. That spontaneous bit helps to keep freshness and relevance in what I do because it is a space to showcase what I’ve learn, what I’m still learning, and what I want to know better.
