Meet Stephanie Savo-Smellie of Caring Therapists

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Savo-Smellie.

Hi Stephanie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
During my senior year of high school I decided I wanted to leave Connecticut and go to college in Florida. So I applied to four different schools in Florida and one back-up school in Connecticut. I got accepted and decided NSU would be where I would pursue my degree in Elementary Education. I started substitute teaching and having classroom experience and realized I wanted to help people from a different angle. So four years into the bachelor’s program I changed my major to Psychology and later went on to pursue my Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling. After working in a few different settings, both community based as well as residential in 2015 I made the decision to transition to private practice and I haven’t looked back.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In the beginning I worked full-time as a clinical director at a residential program and part-time in the evenings doing private practice. As I progressed it wasn’t always smooth, I eventually worked three part-time jobs and increased my hours in private practice. At some point I woke up and realized it was time to take a leap of faith and I went full-time into private practice. There have definitely been times where I have panicked because of cancellations or a slow week and I have also learned in that struggle that things ALWAYS work out.
