Meet Kacy Grace McMillan of Retro Reds Beauty Shop in Fort Lauderdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kacy Grace McMillan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kacy Grace. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started doing hair in high school (in New York) through the Boces program. My first job was in a Chain salon in a quiet location. It wasn’t enough for me, so I moved to a salon in the mall. After working there for over 8 years, I was unhappy in a drab town. I decided I needed a change and I needed to do what was right for me, to be happy. So, I pursued my dreams and relocated to Fort Lauderdale and got a stylist position at Retro Reds. I get to be more creative and push out of the comfort zone my previous salons had in mind. I always push to be on top of trends and learn more about the retro/vintage styles as well. I’ve never been happier.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was born in Sarasota and adopted at 9 months old. I have a mild form of muscular dystrophy, which makes my hands and legs cramp. Lived in North Carolina until at age 10 my parents divorced and we moved to upstate New York. I never liked the idea of New York. My family and most of my “friends” were not supportive of any decision I made and especially the one where I decided to move 1,500 miles away, by myself. My mother never believed I would do anything with my life and felt the need to tell me every day. It was hard to move and luckily I had my sister and my best friend supporting me.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Retro Reds Beauty Shop – what should we know?
I, myself am not the owner. The owner of Retro Reds Beauty Shop is AnnMarie Macko. We are a hair salon. Personally, I specialize in color corrections, fantasy color, and ombré. I’m most proud of my “color corrections” or changing someone’s hair, as I like a good challenge because it helps me stay creative. I’m always watching videos and taking classes to better myself.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My personality and friendliness. Nobody wants a mean stylist who doesn’t listen
