Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodrigo Mendes.
Rodrigo, please share your story with us.
In my career as a fighter, I have won many tournaments such as the World games, Pan American and Nationals (to mention a few), but the most important to me was to be awarded my black belt. Since I was a white belt in Brazil, doctors told me that I would NEVER be able to successfully train BJJ due to a herniated disc in my back. In spite of this, I didn’t just make it to a black belt, but I became a winning fighter and a great teacher along the way. It’s great to see a new student come in without knowing anything about BJJ and after a short while, they grow tremendously in the sport, become great people in their personal life and best of all, become part of our family.
I follow and teach under RMBJJ curriculum. “It’s the best and the most complete program on the market. We follow a curriculum that has continually proven itself to be the most effective over the years in the streets as self-defense and on the mats winning competition after competition.”
Practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is what keeps me going every day, Jiu-Jitsu is not only a martial art but a lifestyle. I see it every day with my students: once they get hooked on BJJ, they can’t stop. It becomes part of your DNA for life. The second great thing about the sport is the brotherhood that we have on and off the mats, our students become more aware and take better care of their bodies, become more respectful with others, I would say even better citizens in society!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?

We are registered under the IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation) and USBJJF (United States Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation). This means you are training under a legitimate black belt who is qualified to teach under the federation. RMBJJ instructors follow a standardized curriculum, organizing all the techniques in the most logical sequence that will enable students to learn in a group class setting. This exceptional atmosphere and high level of teaching is what makes us most proud as a company and sets us apart from other BJJ schools in the area. Throughout the years, many BJJ schools have come and gone through the area. RMBJJ Academy has been a staple in Delray Beach and the South Florida BJJ scene for over 10 years. We also have locations in Coral Springs and Wellington/Lake Worth. You don’t have to worry about our Academy closing down, unlike many other schools. We are here to stay!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. I had a dream to make a career out of my passion and to share with others the lifestyle of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. And my God turned my dream into reality and today I can say that I live my dream. God has opened the door for me to meet so many amazing people through jiu jitsu, I get to train everyday with great people that are like family and I even get my entire family to train with me, too. Success is being able to do what you love and spend time with the people that you love and I am blessed that I get to do both.
