Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Lang Dobson of Miami-Fort Lauderdale

Lang Dobson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Lang, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Overcoming Fear and Following Through: My UX/UI Journey

One of the biggest things I’ve done lately—something that used to scare me—is finally accomplishing a goal I’ve been sitting on for years. At the start of 2025, I made a promise to myself: this was the year I would finally earn my certification in UX/UI design.

This goal had been on my heart for nearly four years. But life, as it often does, kept throwing curveballs. The world changed with COVID. My business slowed down. I got married. I welcomed a beautiful new baby into the world. And through it all, I kept telling myself that this goal could wait.

But eventually, something shifted. I began to feel the urge for a new creative adventure. I wanted to dive deeper into the web space. As I watched how the economy and marketing trends were evolving, I knew it was time to adapt. With years of experience in photography, video production, graphic design, and some web knowledge, I started to envision how I could merge all my creative talents into one cohesive offering. UX/UI felt like the missing piece.

So, I took the leap and enrolled in a six-month UX/UI bootcamp with the University of Texas. I’ll admit—I was nervous. It had been over a decade since I’d been in a classroom setting. The idea of going back to studying, assignments, projects, and quizzes didn’t exactly thrill me. But I knew it had to be done.

To my surprise, the course wasn’t just about design—it was deeply rooted in research, strategy, and user behavior. That was the part I didn’t expect to love so much. User research, testing, data collection—I found myself completely immersed. These skills weren’t just helping me grow professionally; they started showing up in how I think, solve problems, and run my business.

Six months later, I graduated with my UX/UI certificate. That moment meant everything to me—not just because of the paper, but because I had finally followed through. Despite the delays, the doubts, and the fear of starting something new, I did it.

And now? I’m equipped with a broader, sharper skill set. I can offer more to my clients, create with more purpose, and bridge all my creative talents into one powerful toolkit. With faith, consistency, and willpower, I turned a long-standing dream into a reality.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Lang Dobson—a branding photographer and videographer based in the Miami–Fort Lauderdale area. With over 15 years of experience in photography, videography, and graphic design, I’ve had the privilege of helping small to medium-sized businesses bring their visions to life through compelling visuals. I specialize in personal branding, lifestyle, event, and product content, blending creativity with strategy to craft stories that connect and inspire.

I’m also the founder of Make Moves Creative Agency, where we focus on creating bold, intentional content that elevates brands across industries. What makes my work unique is the way I combine my creative background with my training in UX/UI design. I’m always thinking about the bigger picture—how people interact with visuals, how design affects perception, and how content can move people to take action.

Outside of my agency, I serve as a Multimedia Specialist for a city government, which allows me to work on meaningful civic projects that impact my local community.

What excites me most is that I get to do what I love every day—telling stories through different mediums, whether it’s video, photography, or design. Each project is a new opportunity to build connections, learn something new, and achieve a goal that once felt out of reach. I’m passionate about growth and always looking for ways to push creative boundaries while helping others bring their ideas to life.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
One of the most transformative relationships that has shaped me is the one I’ve built with my faith. For most of my life, I was someone who tried to figure everything out on my own. I rarely asked for help and often felt like I had to carry the weight of life’s responsibilities—whether it was my business, work, or personal life—entirely on my shoulders.

That mindset led me into a cycle of overthinking, self-doubt, and anxiety. No matter how hard I pushed, I felt like I was constantly running in circles, never quite feeling “good enough.” In 2024, I hit a low point where I genuinely felt like giving up. I knew I needed something greater than myself to keep me grounded and inspired, especially when things weren’t going my way.

That’s when I gave my life to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I began studying the Word and learning to fully trust that God is in control. I stopped trying to control every outcome and instead placed my mind and soul in His hands. I let go and let God. Through faith, I came to understand that everything I need will be provided in His time. That realization changed everything for me.

This shift was more than spiritual; it was life-changing. It helped me understand my purpose more clearly. With faith, patience, and consistency, and being Humble and thankful in every area of my life, I started to see things align. I experienced a complete transformation, and I carry that peace and purpose with me in everything I do now.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be this:

Don’t let the world dim your light. You are amazing, and you are capable of achieving anything you set your heart on.

When I was younger, I struggled with believing that certain things were possible for me. Growing up poor, with two hardworking immigrant parents living paycheck to paycheck, it was hard to see a future that looked bright. As a young Black kid, I didn’t often see people who looked like me owning businesses, traveling the world, or living lives beyond survival, especially in the environment I was raised in.

But if I could sit with my younger self now, I’d tell him, You don’t have to worry anymore. Life will get better. Stay focused and keep manifesting the world you want to create. It’s not going to be easy, but nothing worth having ever is.

Hard work and prayer will take you far. Be patient. Trust the process. And never, ever doubt yourself.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
One person I deeply admire for their character, not just their influence, is Chris Do, the designer and creative strategist behind The Futur. What stands out to me most about him isn’t just his success, but the way he teaches with humility, passion, and a genuine desire to help others grow.

Chris leads with transparency and authenticity. He shares not only his wins but also his failures, and in doing so, he empowers creatives to embrace both the business and emotional sides of the creative journey. His ability to break down complex ideas into meaningful lessons, while staying grounded and human, is what inspires me the most.

He’s someone I truly hope to meet one day, not just to thank him for how much he’s helped me from afar, but to connect with someone whose values and purpose align so closely with my own. His character reminds me that leadership isn’t about power; it’s about service, impact, empathy, and staying true to who you are.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when all aspects of my life, my mind, body, and soul, are in alignment. For me, peace is about balance. Anytime I do something that supports even one part of my well-being, whether it’s taking time to reflect, moving my body, or spending time with my family, it brings me a deeper sense of Peace.

I believe peace comes from progress and self-awareness. It’s that moment when you can sit down, take a breath, and truly say, “I’m good. I’m happy. I’m blessed.” That’s when I know I’m in a place of peace.
