Story & Lesson Highlights with GREGOIRE DEVIN

We recently had the chance to connect with GREGOIRE DEVIN and have shared our conversation below.

Hi GREGOIRE, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I’m being called now to step out of the shadows and into the light—both literally and creatively. As an artist, I spent years working quietly in my studio, often hidden behind the scenes. I was used to being the one observing, creating, expressing through my work—without people looking directly at me. I avoided cameras and didn’t like seeing myself in photos or videos. I felt more comfortable being invisible.

But that’s changing. I’ve started to feel a genuine pull toward the camera, and I’m learning to feel confident with my image. A big part of that transformation came when I made an appearance in the upcoming French film Le Somnambule, directed by the incredible Tarek Boudali, coming to theaters in February 2027. That experience was powerful—it reminded me that being seen can be just as creative and meaningful as the act of creating itself.

It’s actually quite funny—my paintings were seen before I was! They appeared in the American series The Chi on the Showtime channel. So now, it feels like the natural next step: it’s time for me to be in front of the camera. I’m embracing this new chapter with excitement and openness.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a French artist working primarily in painting and sculpture, and I’ve been dedicated to my artistic journey for the past 16 years. Deeply inspired by the energy and rawness of street art, my work blends contemporary techniques with urban influences, creating pieces that aim to provoke thought and emotion.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of exhibiting internationally, particularly across the U.S. including notable art fairs such as Context Art, Art Palm Beach, and most recently, the Hamptons Art Fair just last week. My work has also found a strong audience in Asia, with private collections in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea. In the Middle East, especially in Dubai, my art has received recognition, and I was honored to win an art award there.

As a creative person, my vision naturally extends beyond the canvas—I also founded my own clothing brand, Grégoire DEVIN, which brings my artistic style into wearable form. Through this brand, I explore the intersection of art and fashion, allowing people to express themselves through bold, meaningful design.

Art for me is about connection—between cultures, ideas, and people. I’m always exploring new materials, themes, and collaborations, and I’m excited for what’s ahead as I continue to grow and share my work with new audiences around the world.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was younger, I believed in destiny — that everything in life was already written and meant to happen a certain way. I thought the path ahead was fixed, no matter what I did. But as I’ve grown older, that belief has changed. Now, I’m convinced that we create our own destiny. It’s through our actions, our choices, and our persistence that we shape the future.

In art, for example, I’ve built everything on my own — year after year, with patience and determination. Maybe some things were “written” somewhere, but they only became real because I showed up, worked hard, and made them happen. Nothing was handed to me — I had to build it all myself.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Honestly, no—I’ve never truly come close to giving up. I’ve faced challenges, doubts, and creative blocks like anyone else, but deep down, I’ve always carried this unwavering determination. I believe in my vision, and nothing can stop me from pursuing it.

I won’t waste energy forcing ideas that don’t feel right—because as a creative person, I generate new ideas constantly. But when it comes to what matters most to me—Art and Fashion—I will never give up. It’s not just what I do; it’s who I am.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, I believe the public version of me is the real me. Over the years, I’ve worked to close the gap between how I present myself to others and how I am in private. I’ve learned that trying to appear perfect or always in control isn’t honest—and it’s not sustainable.

I try to be the same person in public and in private. That doesn’t mean I share everything with everyone, but it does mean I aim to be genuine. I don’t put on a role or a mask; I’ve learned that being “real” is more valuable than being “perfect.”

Being real means accepting myself as I am—strengths, flaws, and all. I’m not afraid to acknowledge my weaknesses. Instead of hiding them, I try to understand them and work on them when I can. It’s a process of growth, not performance.

So, yes—the version of me you see is as real as I know how to be.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I travel abroad, especially on vacation somewhere with a sunny beach and a clear blue sky. There’s something incredibly calming about the sound of the sea, the warmth of the sun, and being far away from the demands of everyday life. I also love walking through old French villages in the south of France—there’s a timeless, artistic atmosphere that helps me truly disconnect and feel free.

Being in that kind of setting feels like paradise to me. Sitting at a beautiful restaurant near the beach, enjoying a good glass of wine, I often find myself dreaming and feeling inspired to create new artworks. I completely understand why so many artists chose to live and create on the French Riviera—I feel exactly the same. The light, the energy, the beauty of the landscape—it all fuels my creativity. The sun, especially, is essential for me. It gives me the light and energy I need to grow, both as a person and as an artist.
