We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lexey. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Lexey, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I think now and always music makes me lose track of time, whether it’s listening or picking out melodies while sitting with the violin. I love to jot down ideas of songs and transitions, sets I could do for weeks on end and then sit and go through it. I pick out tempos and keys that make sense in putting it all together. It’s really like a never ending task of creativity with all the possibilities, like a chef laying out their ingredients and then their tools and coming up with a recipe. That’s maybe the part people miss, the number of steps it takes to get to the final product, “the meal” when everything is ready to go and present to the world.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an electric violinist and dj, music curator for events, brands, and social gatherings. I began music as a classical musician studying piano and then violin moving to the country from Russia. I played violin pretty seriously growing up and only studied classical music. After graduating high school and not getting into any music schools (truth be told I just didn’t have the chops to make it), I quit playing vision and I began DJing and learning about all other music genres. It was a different approach to music and I felt like I had tapped into uncharted territory for myself and got to learn about all different kinds of music and bring it to a broader audience. Since around the 2020 pandemic I decided to get back to violin and using my now found free time at that moment combine DJing with violin. I experimented and learned to improvise, pick out keys, invent melodies, and create a new spin to my music.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Lack of communication and maybe misunderstanding can break a bond between people. Sometimes people are wrapped up in their own version of events that doesn’t even reflect the other person’s account of what’s happened. If you suck it up and stop out your pride and ego to approach someone, reach out, apologize if it’s warranted or just clear things up I bet a lot of bonds could be restored.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I think as an introvert and perhaps perfectionist it’s an unlikely path to become a performing musician especially in the atmosphere I’m typically in. Sometimes glitzy, sometimes glamorous, always with a head turning kind of performance, at the beginning this created a lot of anxiety. I was just starting out performing like this and it created a lot of pressure to put on a show when I was honestly still trying to figure out the notes. But as anything, it’s a learned skill, a muscle you need to train. No matter the discomfort, I see in my self the progress and the move towards a more comfortable and true me. I think in this way you can work through the anxiety and relate to people on a deeper level.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Some parts. My normal day is full with family duties, comfortable clothes, lots or running around. I do all that so I can then make a change and put on the beautiful outfits to perform for a few hours. We can be anything for a few hours, that’s the fun of it. I don’t have to talk a lot in public because the music does all the communicating for me so it’s almost easier to leave the public me a bit of an enigma.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Worrying about the small things and wasting time on mundane tasks. Having a family, your priorities shift and you want to make lasting memories, travel to interesting places, do unique experiences.
