Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Fontaine.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am originally from Colombia (South America). I came to this wonderful country who is now my home when I was 15 years old. Came to study with big dreams of getting a better life with better opportunities (just like many other immigrants). Went to school and college for Business Administration. Started working at very young age while going to school at same time.
Dancing has been my one constant and passion since I was 4 years old. I started dancing at Ballet academies and in school and continued doing so even when I came to the US. I love the feeling of freedom when I dance. I feel like my soul is free and I can express my feelings through dance. I was a professional dancer for many years; danced with different agencies and groups and had marvelous experiences.
I had to retire my professional dancing shoes very young due to a injure and due to depression gained a lot of weight. I found fitness and fell in loved with it immediately. They idea of being able to work your body to look the way you want it to be through discipline and determination.
Then Zumba came along. Zumba is a dance-fitness format and this was right at my alley. Dancing??? Well, yes of course! it’s what I love the most. I thought that finding something that could do the two things I liked: dancing and fitness. I was hooked. I got licensed about 5 years ago and starting teaching in the Fort Lauderdale Downtown area in different local gyms and park’s social centers. Loved the feeling of sharing my passion with others and influencing other people’s lives for the better. The feeling you get to see people’s faces smiling and happy while they are dancing and exercising with you is incomparable.
One day, during a conversation with a friend, she asked me what I would do if I had the money (business wise). and I said that I would love to have a Dance Studio. Then, the question after that conversation was, “well… why not? what’s stopping me?”. So there it started my journey, I immediately sought out to get certified as a Fitness Instructor with AFAA and learned all about the fitness side in depth. Continued to teach my classes around and gain a good clientele.
Finally, in 2017, I found the right place right in Downtown Ft. Lauderdale and together with my husband we opened JK Dance Fitness Studio. My dream come true. We offer different classes such as Zumba, Salsa, Flamenco, Fitness classes such as Abs of Steel, Lower and Upper body isolation classes, Total body sculpting, Strong by Zumba, Kids dance classes and more. We offer classes in the morning and night. Our Studio is located in the heart of downtown Ft Lauderdale right in the Art District and as such we also open our studio walls to a local artist to use to exhibit their art. Our studio is also open for rentals whether is a party, a private class, an event, etc. You can check out our information on our website at www.jkdancefitness.com.
Our mission comes from our vision, from the very same reasons we wanted to start the studio. We long to share our passion for dance, fitness and health while combining it with fun and friends. To help influence our community in a positive way while motivating them to reach their health, social or fitness goals. JK Studio is a place for the community. For friends to come and workout together or simply have fun while dancing.
Our commitment is to keep each of our classes with a limited amount of participants, allowing our instructors to make their classes more personal and intimate, which subsequently maximize your results. Our instructors are certified, experienced and seasoned; hand-picked with personalities that will make each class a blast!
We are all about community, providing our studio as a platform for local artists to showcase their work at our facility. We constantly offer different types of events to raise funds for different causes of breast cancer, disaster relief, community outreach and many more!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not at all. Like any other business, the opening is just one part. We were looking for the right place for about 1 year and so, when we found it was to adequate it and now it is the challenge to advertise, market and keep our classes interesting, challenging and for all wanting to cone back for more. Perseverance is the key.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with JK Dance Fitness Studio – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
