Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Ayala.
Hi Brittany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a foodie. I grew up either watching my mom or abuelita cook and binging cooking shows on the Food Network. My summers were spent in Puerto Rico, watching Cielito Rosado with my great grandma and that’s when I started writing down recipes.
I started taking cooking class in high school but realized I hated smelling like food all day. Baking was a lot more fun for me and my first decorated cake was for my nephew’s 4th birthday. Everyone loved it, and that gave me the push to keep going. Eventually, I decided to level up and went to culinary school at Johnson & Wales and received my degree in Baking and Pastry Arts.
My first customers were my high school teachers and family friends. My family and I would take samples to work and word of mouth kept spreading. I decided to I open an Instagram and Facebook page in 2013 and been baking ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not.
I was a star student growing up and expectations were for me to become a doctor or medical professional. So when I said I wanted to become a Pastry Chef, it wasnt the most fond idea for my family but I was persistent.
At times, I felt overwhelmed going to class all morning, working hours at my internship and finishing the night at work in the pharmacy.
But I made it through and still make it through till this day.
I work a full time job and create my custom orders on the time I have off during the evenings and weekends.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Sweets by Britt, I’m kind of like a rennaissance woman. I create custom sweet treats for special occasions such as cakes, cookies, cupcakes, chocolate covered treats.
I’m known for my custom cakes in fondant and buttercream, my royal icing cookies and most notable, my Puerto Rican Brandy Cakes.
I am most proud of my growth throughout the years. I can proudly say that the quality and attention to detail of my treats has evolved over the years and making sure I keep working on my skills.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I not just deliver treats that are pretty to look at but theyre also delicious. I treat my clients as I’d want to be treated and always try to accommodate them in any way possible.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Spending summer evenings watching the sun go down with my brother above my grandparent’s rooftop in Puerto Rico. We would go there to escape the heat and something about seeing the landscape was peaceful.
