Check out Yesenia D. Garcia’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yesenia D. Garcia.

Yesenia D., we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have always loved being creative and having artistic outlets, including participating in theatre throughout most of my time in school. As a young adult, I didn’t see artistic endeavors as a viable choice for a long term career, so I decided to study history in college. My studies and my time in university lead me to a career in the political arena. While I had a good and fulfilling career, doing work to help working class people, I decided that I wanted to take the plunge and switch to a career in the arts.

Makeup had always been something I was interested in, so I quit my job and attended Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry in Fort Lauderdale. Going to makeup school was the best choice I have ever made, and I have been building my career as a professional makeup artist since I graduated in July of 2016. I now work as a production makeup artist on short and feature length films shot in the Miami area.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
In the literal sense, I use many different techniques and mediums to alter the appearance of my clients and actors. Depending on what the project is, I could be mixing a custom foundation to create a seamless base, blending and placing colors to most flatter my clients’ face shape and coloring, or sculpting and fabricating prosthetic pieces to transform my subject into an entirely different creature. More importantly, however, I think there’s immense power in using the human form as a canvas.

As a makeup artist focusing on the film industry, I see makeup as a tool for storytelling, and I see makeup artists as storytellers. Whether it is subtle dark circles under a character’s eyes or a monster in head to toe prosthetics, makeup can do so much to an inform an audience about a character’s internal dialogue and the world they live in.

How can artists connect with other artists?
Social media has been an incredible boon to the artistic community. It connects in ways that were never possible before and has inspired so many new people to have confidence in their artistic abilities, myself included. We should be using these new tools at our disposal to build community amongst artists in our local areas. We should go out and see and support each others’ work. We should build networks and figure out how we can work together, both in our own niches and across different mediums. As artists, what all have in common is that we use the world around us to inspire the things we create, and we should be figuring out ways to do that together more often.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Most of my work can be seen in Miami-made films. Support your local film industry! I post pictures of my work on Instagram, and I’ll be keeping folks updated on my projects released this year on my Facebook page.
