Today we’d like to introduce you to Alessandra Doniger
Hi Alessandra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After moving in with my then boyfriend, now husband, while studying for the bar exam, I sought a creative outlet. We had numerous blank walls, and I decided to create a piece of art for our living space. Inspired by Jeff Koons’ popsicle bouquet, I envisioned making a popsicle-themed artwork for our apartment, as it would be playful and perfectly suited for a Miami apartment. After several attempts and approximately two months of effort, I finally created a piece that we were proud to hang on our wall. After much convincing, I decided to share it on Instagram for fun. One of my first messages was from the rainbow-loving jewelry designer and influencer, Stephanie Gottlieb. She was captivated by the pops and expressed her desire to collaborate with me on a custom piece for her daughter’s rainbow-themed nursery. This unexpected opportunity led to a surge in my following and numerous inquiries about purchasing my artwork. Since then, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse range of influencers and celebrities, including Arielle Charnas, Katherine Schwarzenegger, and Chris Pratt, as well as Bravo TV stars. I was accepted to present my art during art Basel weekend where I connected with several gallery owners. Currently, my work is showcased in Miami’s fine Art gallery at their multiple locations in coconut grove and wynwood. I actively host gallery nights there, where I introduce new pieces and engage with art lovers, my favorite part of what I do!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business with a legal background proved to be more challenging than I had anticipated. Not only did I have to create the art, but I also had to manage the social media, website, finances, customer service, inventory, and every other aspect along the way proved to be a much larger undertaking than originally thought.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create art that makes people happy. I have been told its hard to look at my pieces and not smile. I specialize in vibrant, colorful popsicle sculptures that come together to form a single, cohesive piece that tells a playful color story through the combination of all the sculptures. As my work gained recognition, I’ve encountered numerous instances of artists copying my creations. However, the unique and cohesive nature of my pieces sets me apart. I’m most proud of the opportunity to donate my work to charities and have my pieces fetch prices that can significantly contribute to the community. Every year, I participate in several auctions to raise funds for charitable causes.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
COVID-19 led to significant supply challenges for me. Many of my daily supplies unexpectedly became backordered. I had to become resourceful and explore new frames and alternative sources for obtaining materials. This experience highlighted people’s desire to refresh their spaces and underscored the importance of having art in our homes that evokes emotions, particularly joy!
