Check Out Paulo Antunes’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paulo Antunes

Hi Paulo, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I work as a commentator and reporter for ESPN Brazil. This since 2006. I graduated from Emerson College in 2001 and decided to move to Brazil. While there, working for a TV affiliate in Santos, São Paulo (2002-2005), I decided I wanted a change and called ESPN Brazil, located in the city of São Paulo, a number of times trying to get work there until I was finally able to talk to the right person. I came in for a meeting and was asked me to come in for a “test” broadcast for NFL and MLB games. They needed a commentator for these sports and figured since I grew up in the USA, that I could be the right person for the job. I passed and was offered a job commentating MLB and the NFL. I did 12 years of baseball and am on my 19th doing football. I’ve called 12 Super Bowls from the Stadium and also reported on 6 NBA Finals.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No real struggles. I’ve been able to help grow the game there and this year Brazil hosted its first NFL game. I called the game from the stadium. It’s been a smooth ride.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m proud that I’ve been able to hang around for almost 20 years, and am recognized as the main voice of the NFL in Brazil. I get many messages from fans saying how they fell in love with the sport. I also find it “funny” that I created a catch phrase that has caught on: “temos um jogo”. They even put in on the big screen during the NFL game in Sao Paulo this year.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Playing sports in the US right after emigrating from Brazil in 1985. Being a sports fan of the Red Sox, Celtics and Dolphins.
