Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Garrett Modkins.
Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far. I am a Miami native. I was born in the community of Richmond Heights which was established in 1949 for Black WWII Veterans by a white pilot for Pan American Airways. The history of this community implored upon me to co-author a book in 2013, Images of America: Miami’s Richmond Heights. In 2016, I released a documentary on the community, The Richmond Heights 49ers.
After getting my Bachelors from North Carolina A&T SU, I landed a dream job on a morning show reporting the news. For over two-decades Jessica Garrett Modkins has Influenced, Developed, and Built Brands: A Brand Influencer and a Brands Developer personified. She is the founder of Hip Rock Star, a trailblazing, award winning, advertising, marketing, and communications agency that focuses exclusively to build today’s socially conscious brands. She is an Influencer for the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau pinning articles on Miami.
Under Modkins’ business acumen, Hip Rock Star received the 2017 Key to Miami from Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the Beacon Council, 2017 Goldman Sachs 10K Small Business, 2017 Marketing Firm of the Year from the Black Owned Media Alliance, and the 23rd Annual Communicator Award for Integrated Campaign Distinction from the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts.
Hip Rock Star’s primary position is behind the scenes and there is no doubt that you have experienced her work with Hip Rock Star. Whether you’ve read an advertisement on a billboard or bus bench, heard her clients on the hottest talk shows on TV or Radio, read about them in a print publication or been to one of their signature events, you’ve witnessed her hip rock star effect.
She holds a Master of Science degree in Integrated Marketing Communication from West Virginia University and a Bachelors of Arts degree from North Carolina A&T State University in Broadcast News Radio & Television. She lives in Cutler Bay, Florida with her husband Roy and their two children; Dallas Garrett Modkins and Harper Day Modkins. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and was appointed to the Economic Trust Committee for the City of Cutler Bay.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way? My struggles come when I doubt myself. If I could look back on my life at 32, I would tell myself to believe in my dreams and that anything is possible. Doubt is a dream killer. I had to press forward in FAITH. Trust the unknown and be okay with any opposition.

We have two divisions: Consumer and Recruiting. With each division our goal is to tell a brand story in the most compelling way to reach customers or talent where they are. Driving listening to the radio, scrolling through social media, watching TV or You Tube, or going to a festival. We will find you.

I learned that anything is possible. At WVU, I learned to think strategically. To deal in big data and to quantify. At the Goldman Sachs 10K program for small businesses, I learned to plan with action.
