Daily Inspiration: Meet Tatiana Castro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatiana Castro

Hi Tatiana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a plant lover since I can remember. One of my earliest memories was standing in front of my tree in the yard to protest it being cut down. After going to school and learning about botany and interpretation, I found my true calling: environmental education. I’ve worked in the museum and botanical garden space throughout the years and have dedicated my life to connecting people to nature through immersive and memorable experiences. Within the last year, I’ve achieved a great goal of mine, which was starting my own business. Through Teachings by Tatiana, I offer myself as a guide to the environment, uncovering Mother Nature’s wonders and making science fun!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I love to wear many hats in my work, but it can be hard to be a solo entrepreneur. My expertise is in my craft as a science communicator and educator, so learning about the ins and outs of starting a business, managing my finances, and even designing my website took many months of asking for help – either from Google or my community. I’ve found what has been the most beneficial for me is not only asking for help, but hiring experts in the areas I struggle with. Through their work and support, I’ve found a great footing to establish the foundations of my business.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an science communicator and informal educator by training. I went to school for environmental and museum studies, and concentrated my coursework to learn about the best practices in teaching complex topics, making science relevant, and most of all, coming up with strategies to make the learning experience memorable and relatable. My speciality is in teaching about botany and ecosystem services. I love how all species on Earth work together, and most of all, how humans rely and relate to the plant life in our communities.

I’m most proud of the workshops, classes, and presentations I’ve been able to offer to families all over Miami. One great concept I learned about through my higher education was intergenerational learning. I am super passionate about connecting plant science to learners of all ages, and work to facilitate conversations within a group so adults can learn from kids, and vice versa. I believe what sets me apart from others is my calm and nurturing approach to teaching about the environment. There are no test or papers to grade after my teachings, and I want to make sure all my students feel comfortable and empowered to engage their curiosity and explore their interests as they want to.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I love this question! Again, as the founder, educator, curriculum developer, web designer, etc., of my business, I really try to learn as much from others as much as possible.

My go-to resources lately have been the Goal Digger podcast by Jenna Kutcher, the Regenerative Business book by Sam Garcia, and the work of Cultural Visionaries by my dear friend and copy writing expert, Mayra Gómez Sánchez.
