Meet Kevin Cohen of VetRec

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Cohen

Hi Kevin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Venezuela, lived there for 17 years before moving to the United States.
My family and I moved to Miami, Fl where I spent a year in high school before heading off to Penn State. From a very young age, I was always interested in technology, computers, video games, and very curious about how things worked. While I tinkered around programming languages in Venezuela, it wasn’t until I moved to the States where I took official classes in high school about this topic. I fell in love and knew that I wanted to dedicate my life to it.

In Penn State I studied Computer Science which led me to an internship and an eventual full time offer at Microsoft, in Seattle. I lived 8 years there before coming back to Miami to be closer to family.
While at Microsoft, I got to participate in high-impacting products with stellar teams, which led to an accelerated career growth. I mainly worked in AI and Data platforms for Microsoft Office, specifically in their cloud division now called M365.

In 2023, I quit to build a startup with my cofounder David De Matheu, a friend since my Penn State days. We had the opportunity to be part of the prestigious YCombinator accelerator program in which we got immersed to the startup world head-on. After several months of trial and error on different products, we finally landed on VetRec, an AI Scribe for Veterinarians.
VetRec came to be from a desire to help improve the veterinarian’s life and wellbeing as well as the efficiency of the veterinary clinic.
One day, I took one of my dogs to the vet and saw first-hand how the veterinarian spent 80% of the consult just looking at a computer rather than at my dog. After much inquiry, David and I understood that the problem lied on medical records, and we set to build a software, powered by Artificial Intelligence that would automate the medical records for veterinary professionals.
Since we launched in December the product has grown massively, with thousands of veterinarians using the product. Not to mention, the company itself has grown to a humble team of 5!

We are just getting started and aim to help many more veterinarians in the years to come.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
– Definitely moving out of my country, Venezuela, had a huge impact on our culture and family. Getting used to things, making new friends, and wanting to achieve a lot were all things that I had in my head constantly.
– In terms of the company, we quit Microsoft and spent 6 months building different ideas unsuccessfully. None of them panned out and we were struggling to find motivation. Grit and perseverance were the factors that helped us stay on track and pushed us along the way.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I put a little bit of information on the previous box but I’ll share a bit more here.

VetRec is helping Veterinarians save 2 hours a day. We do this by leveraging cutting-edge artificial intelligence models that generate medical records, medical summaries, and client communications,
David and I are the founders.

We are in the Veterinary Medicine industry.

While competition is there, we pride ourselves on the engineering quality, speed, and focus on support that we give to customers. We work closely with veterinarians and have invested resources on understanding and applying workflows that allow veterinarians to save a couple of seconds here and there on every case. This attention to detail makes a huge difference over the long run.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
“The squeaky wheel takes the grease” This is an article I wrote a couple of years ago that perfectly summarizes how i think of Risk and how people should just go for it. https://kevinco.medium.com/the-key-to-continuous-growth-9855294aab03
