Conversations with Jessica Chin Fong

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Chin Fong

Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve had a love for advertising since I was a kid. Growing up in Venezuela, I was impressed by the ads in my dad’s Fortune 500 magazines from the ’80s. Even though I didn’t get the clever English taglines, the visuals really sparked my imagination. That love for ads sent me on a fun journey through the twists and turns of marketing.

My career hasn’t been a straight line. I started out in an agency as a designer, but after a few years, I hit burnout. I took a break during what I like to call my “Eat, Pray, Love” era. During that time, I got into teaching yoga and learned how to promote myself, which caught the attention of the brand Lululemon. They brought me on as an ambassador and even flew me out to their headquarters in Vancouver. Eventually I jumped back into the corporate scene, this time with a goal to really make waves in the social media world.

Now, I’m known for my social media marketing skills and have worked with Global brands like Orangetheory Fitness, Travelpro International, and Atlantic Luggage.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Breaking into a global brand like Orangetheory close to my 40s without a traditional marketing background wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. Let’s be honest: companies often lean towards hiring younger candidates for entry-level roles. So, I played it smart—dressed younger, acted the part, and thankfully, good genes were on my side.

After years as a designer in an ad agency with late nights and lots of stress, I was determined to switch gears to a company that matched my passion for health and fitness and better work-life balance. When I finally got hired at Orangetheory, I did my best to fit in with the younger crowd; even though I had more experience in some areas, I was seriously lacking in others. But I was eager to learn. I worked extremely hard to catch up, and it wasn’t until about six months later that I felt ready to come clean with my age. By then I had already proven myself.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m in a pretty unique spot—I help brands grow their social media, especially on Instagram and through influencer marketing. I love experimenting with my own accounts and using those insights to benefit the brands I work with.

I’m particularly proud of growing Travelpro’s Instagram audience by over 77% in just over a year and generating 1.4 million impressions for Orangetheory within a single month through influencer marketing, with 90% of those resulting in bookings.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Social media is changing fast, thanks to advances in AI and shifts in how content is made. AI tools are helping creators pump out content quicker, leading to a boom in new, smaller production companies and a race among creators to stay ahead. With so much content flooding the platforms, we might hit a point where some creators find it hard to keep up with the constantly shifting algorithms.

AI will play an increasingly central role, not just in content creation but also in personalizing user experiences, optimizing ad targeting, and moderating content.

I believe we might see a rise in decentralized social media platforms and niche communities, potentially reducing the concentration of influence among a few major players.
