Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Kiaroscuro.
Andrew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was four years old when I began my theatrical journey dressing up as Peter Pan or Batman strutting my stuff inside various supermarkets. By the age of 11, I shot my first short film “Attack of the Mosquitoes” with my Iranian friend who was willing to put a sock on his head to get into character. I played the video to my middle school class and it was well received.
I continued this pursuit of filmmaking through high school and college where I received my BA in film studies from UNCW. By the age of 25 I had already directed familiar celebrities such as Wiz Khalifa, Bass Nectar, Waka Flocka, and worked with brands such as ESPN & TLC.
My greatest successes to date are having one of my last feature scripts optioned by Paramount pictures and one of my shows “Club Chicks” currently on the market to be picked up.
Now, I work as a creative director executing my vision to heighten brand awareness and drives sales through their marketing efforts. I’ve directed over 500+ videos, written 9 features, and over a 100+ commercial spots.
Even today, I still thoroughly enjoy the art of filmmaking and look to take this journey as far as I can.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most difficult part about filmmaking is keeping the passion thriving inside you.
Without passion, your content is not as thoughtful and it effects your viewers relationship to it. And, I do this by stretching myself and the experiences I undergo to understand humanity better. You cannot develop genuine characters without coming from a place of truth. So I think finding that truth that inspires you is the key to be successful in this field.
Please tell us about Kiaro Pictures.
Kiaro Pictures is a Digital Motion Picture Agency and that can get lost in translation easily because so many people make videos. We do not make videos. We produce art that reflects the personality of brands or stories needed to be told. And, I think that is the biggest difference from other production companies. We do not film videos where everyone is disingenuously smiling in commercials or the cliché. We dig deep for what makes characters work and we a lot of time in pre-production making sure they are multi-dimensional. Whether it’s working on a commercial, movie, tv show, or music video, we do not try to maximize profits by being flashy and cliché. That has never been are goal and never will be.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories from my childhood is also my earliest. I was probably 2 years old or younger and my father was holding me, rocking me underneath bright sunlight. His face was silhouetted from the sun as he sung to me, “Don’t let the sunshine get in your eyes”. I’ll never forget this because it was the start of a very loving relationship between a son and his father that ended all too soon when I lost him at the age of 19.
